ok so I just brought a 320gb hard drive for my xbox because I heard that if you had a usb above 16gb you could format it like a proper xbox hdd. (giving me the ability to use bungie file share).... it didn't work, am I doing it wrong or do I have to purchase a ridiculously overpriced xbox hard drive? sorry I am a cheap skate :)

Bungie is no longer in control of any Halo related functions, Please direct any concerns to Waypoint.

This is not a Halo question. It belongs in The Flood Forum.

As for the HDD, I do not know if you can format it as a normal Xbox HDD. I have never seen someone try it, and from my knowledge, the media update for the 360 only effected flash drives that use USB ports.

As an educated guess, I'm going to go with "probably not". Microsoft probably wants you to buy their own Xbox 360 licensed HDDs for larger storage amounts.
