Instead of simply reiterating that it would become a popularity contest, why not suggest a way of getting around that? I'm sure if you put your heads together you could come up with something.

Just to throw something out there for you to start with: what if the community nominated people for us (ninjas) to [potentially] select from?
Asking the community to think about, contemplate, analyze, and choose nominees for Forum Ninja would be like asking a dog to speak English. All you're going to get is the same thing you've been hearing.
I think the idea is to get the popularity contest out of the way and then have people with experience being a Ninja pick from those popular people someone who's worthy of being a Ninja.
Why does the person have to be popular? Take the popularity contest and favoritism out of the picture. Then it sounds like a plausible idea.

Yup, any lurker could do a job just as good as any ignorant popular person could.

That's impossible if the community is involved.

That's why if the community nominates, votes, and comes up with, say 25 community members who they think would be good Forum Ninjas (some may be, others my just be popular), the actual Forum Ninjas would take over and pick, say, five of those 25 who they would see fit to be Forum Ninjas from their experience as Ninjas.

The Ninjas act as a filter. Sure, there could be some obscure member who does nothing but lurk and is probably the best possible pick for a Forum Ninja, but I don't think it makes sense to have Ninjas pick people that the community doesn't, in some way, want.

If the community likes the new generation of Ninjas based on their voting and at the same time Ninjas give them the OK, that would be an ideal situation, wouldn't it?

Better yet, why don't we vote on which moderators or employees choose the next set of moderators. :D

I would, but, there's a lot of drama between members here fighting to be popular. It's really hard to think they'll be able to manage to choose a mod just for the sake of moderating and not to take advantage of the system.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

Bad idea. In fact, the worst idea. Because it will come down to a popularity contest, which I'm sure a certain someone who I will not name would win.

I trust their (Bungie/HFCS) methods, and they have yet to select a bad mod. I have no such faith in this community.

Why does it matter what the community wants? What the community wants isn't necessarily what's good for site. In terms of moderation, it's up to the webteam to decide.

I don't like the idea of limiting the number, because then there's the eventual problem of who's going to be in charge of submitting/arbitrating those 25 names and suggestions.

IMO, the nomination(s) should be private, a reason should be given for why the nominee would make a good moderator, and there shouldn't be any overall limit to how many total nominations can be made (maybe there could be for a single user making them though).

I'm either a fool or an inteligent man, depending on how sleepy or angry I am.

I originaly made an account on 07.27.2007 but I wanted to link my GT and made this account. Don't forget your passwords!

OP has a silly idea. It would be rife with alternate accounts and Bungie would be needlessly choosing popularity over proper canidates. Let Bungie keep their secret ways and what not, it actualy helps in the long run.

Why does it matter what the community wants?
Because without a community, there is no Bungie.net. I don't mean to add some sort of philosophical ideology to this all, but "giving the people what they want" (to an extent*) still is a highly applicable idea to this situation and any situation with Bungie and Bungie.net.

*I have a feeling even with this addition to the statement, the quote will still be taken out of context and commented on (even with this footnote).

Well, yeah. My idea was just to demonstrate the way in which the process includes both what the community wants and what the Ninjas approve of.

I could see many users easily taking the time to make multiple XBL accounts, and also making them all gold. And what of the users that don't have gold (like me) or even a linked account.

It's practically impossible to eliminate all problems, but it's probably the closest.
I'm not really saying that voting is a good idea, just thinking of ways to make it as fair as possible if it were to happen.

  • 07.21.2012 11:54 PM PDT

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

An interesting idea yet very far from being a good idea. It would simply be a popularity contest. Sure, some people would legitimately vote for someone who would be a great choice for being a mod but others would simply vote for familiar names they've seen around the forums and what not.

Here's one for you.
Create a private group containing the interested parties. Depending on numbers, every day, or few days, the mods are rotated.
Everyone else in the group can do whatever the hell they want, while each set of moderators must attempt to do the fairest, best possible job.

It could be highly entertaining, while also fairly educating.

Edit: Sure it's a pretty vague idea now, but if people actually wanted to do something like this it could be refined.
Who could judge it? Ninjas and DeeJ, if they had the time and wanted to, otherwise some other impartial, sensible members would have to be found.

There would be no prize, just a warm feeling that you knew you could moderate a potentially difficult private group better than others.
