If you are striving to win, then why do you not strive to win at the next level, and actually try to gain money from it?

Actually, yes. Even the worst player in the game wants to win. He may not care as much if he loses, but his primary goal is to win the current match.

When you first started playing Halo, I can imagine you weren't the best player around, right? When you played your first match, did you want to win that match? I'm sure winning is not your main purpose at that time, but you did want to win, right?
I'm sure your sole purpose for playing video games it have fun, right? Would you say you play the game to have fun, or you play the game competitively? I'm sure you would say to have fun.
When you look at Strictly Competitive players, their main ambition is to win. Halo Reach wasn't a fun game for them, but they had to stick with it to maintain that paycheck. They have to prepare by practicing 30+ hours a week, and sometimes they get worn out from it.
There's a difference there
