Subject: You are not competitive, you are casual

because everyone plays to win.

Competitive means "having or displaying a strong desire to be more successful than others". It has nothing to do with how good or successful you are, or even if you play to win.

Also, I do not play to win, I play to have fun.
So playing to win is not having fun for some? Why must playing to win and having fun not co-exist?

I never said that playing to win isn't having fun for some. Neither did I say they cannot co-exist.

The fact you had to say "I play to have fun" makes me think otherwise.

Also, I do not play to win, I play to enjoy the game and myself. I couldnt give less of a -blam!- about winning.

Everyone plays for fun. What they have to do in order to have fun is whats separates casuals from competitives. Competitive players have to be on top of the scoreboard to have fun. Casuals don't.

  • 07.22.2012 12:06 AM PDT

Nope. Competitive players want to win against fair competition(ie. they prefer balanced settings and ranking to be matched against people of equal skill), and improve. Some casuals do not want to win, most do, but those that do want to win do not care how (ie. they don't care about ranking or team inequality), and they do not want to improve.

Let's couch my decent of your thesis in the relatively similar terms of armature sports. College athletes do not receive direct financial compensation for participation in sports. While some may receive indirect compensation or may strive to attain it - scholar ships, progression to paid competition - they don't all play for the same reasons. Some of the fiercest competitors fully know that they, like the majority of their cohorts, they will not be progressing to the next level of competition. This does not diminish the level of competition that is being exerted by the individual athlete in any given sport; those that move on and those that do not only differ in terms of perceived talent or potential.

By contrast in video games the best and most competitive players are not necessarily all MLG pros. There is a segment of fiercely competitive players that are not playing for cash.

Competitive =/= professional

In that case, everyone is a competitive player, because everyone plays to win. Just because you have a slight bit of teamwork or callouts, you are still not a competitive player.

A professional is someone who makes money from a profession.
A competitive is somebody who strives for winning.

Many people have posted on the forums that they enjoy the crazy fun times rather than trying to win. Those people are casual.
No not really. I have screwed off on halo since CE and have never given a flying -blam!- about winning or K/D (becuase I am bad). I am not a casual though

I'm new to competitive Halo and Halo itself (Reach being my first video game ever actually). Message me if you want to play;

Reach: MLG, Arena, Doubles, BTB and customs.
Halo 3: Ranked MM and customs.

Also I have every Halo title and all of its DLC on the Xbox 360.

Maybe "competitive" and "casual" don't have the same meaning as the literal definition of each when applied to Halo. Just maybe...

Except the definition of casual is a person who does not care. We care. We are obviously not casuals.

The Internet is an empowerment tool that's agnostic; it doesn't care about race, gender, or age.

You don't need to be pro to be competitive at gaming...

Always up for REACH customs!

I was going to argue with this guy but then I saw he went to Harvard so he clearly knows what he's talking about.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

There is a difference between "professional" and having a competitive urge to win games.

  • 07.22.2012 8:37 PM PDT

"Before you insult someone, try walking a mile in their shoes. This way, when you insult them, you are a mile away and have their shoes."

Okay. So?

  • 07.23.2012 1:20 AM PDT

that is professional. Competitive just means that you play to win, and not simply for fun.

Real account.

If you assign every letter of the alphabet a number, a is 1, b is 2, etc., and you take all of the values of the word "MATH", and add them, you get 42. So math is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

Whatever you say, sport.
