If the site did these two things, 95% of spam and chronic rulebreaking would be eliminated.
Where did you get this figure?

Considering it seems to be the sole reason for your rather confining proposals, I would like evidence.

The "not everyone has a cell phone" argument is, IMO, a complete red herring and a bogus reason not to implement this.
It may very well be a minute percentage of users that don't have a cell phone, but it is still users that you would be stopping from singing up to the site. To counter this, adding a Home-Phone/Landline number would cover everybody that doesn't have a cell phone. You add your cell phone and you get a text. You add your Home number and you get the code read by "Microsoft Sam".

I'm certain that that would cover every user on the site.

:-)

Then you have people using two numbers and having an alt
At least they are limited to only two alts....unless they have multiple cell phones and change their house number frequently.

Edit- Maybe set it up so you can only input one or the other....not both.

I think it might be beneficial. Such as an alt being created. Of course, that account will be permabanned (if creating because of another account being banned), then I agree there would be a need for a 3 or 7 day delay.

Would there be the concern that those who don't have cell phones can't post? That mandates the need to purchase a phone, and I would say B.net has done a great job of making itself free.
This is a concern in theory only. While theoretically, it is possible that a user of this site (i.e., an internet user and gamer) might not have access to a mobile phone, the reality is that 100% of this site's users own or have access to a cell phone. I have yet to run across one who can genuinely claim that he or she doesn't.

The "not everyone has a cell phone" argument is, IMO, a complete red herring and a bogus reason not to implement this.
I would hazard a guess that cell phones are usually higher on people's list of priorities than computers. Sure, there could be someone who accesses BNet from a library and doesn't have a cell phone, so just to allow that person to access the forums, allow then to do so if no validation is given in a year. It sounds extreme but, a) lurking isn't as terrible as some people make it seem and b) the amount of people who access BNet from a library and also don't own cell phones is of such a small percentage when compared to those who don't that this clause would only be added (if added) for Bungie to be nice to that one person and exentuate the fact that they care about all of their fans.

Needs of many > that of few, and all that.

1. Tie user accounts to their cell phone number, make them validate it by inputting a code sent by text message, and allow only one account per phone number.

2. Prohibit new accounts from posting in the Flood Forum -- new threads OR within thread -- for at least 30 days.

If the site did these two things, 95% of spam and chronic rulebreaking would be eliminated.

I agree with this man.

The question is should one sacrifice users without phones just to slightly setback spam?

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I think all of these are terrible ideas. We shouldn't put more limits on making new accounts, we should have a better system for dealing with trolls and spam. Why punish users who have done nothing wrong, when they're potentially not the problem? I understand they're already restricted to the 24 hour delay to create topics, but that's far less invasive than making you tie your account to a cell phone or preventing users from posting for multiple days. I don't think that is broken. Our ability to actually punish people is what needs to be addressed.

If Bungie had had the cellular phone qualification when I first joined, I'd never have made an account. I see no logical reason to tie my account to a cell phone, or anything else really. That's just unreasonably restrictive.

Okay, toss the cell phone idea, let's say we work out a harsher punishment then. Does this mean mods become more generous in passing out permanent bans? To what extent is a permanent ban really working, is it IP, or something else?

I really am interested in hearing you elucidate on the point of a better system. Perhaps I ask though because I don't fully understand the system right now.

Agreed, it was simply me playing devil's advocate, I quite honestly think that you have quite the foolproof method there, and I'm surprised it hasn't been implemented.
Agrajag I find this post to be the most shocking post of this thread. I find it even more shocking than the post you quoted in it. You use foolproof the way Foman uses red herring.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

Then people who seek to cause harm will create an account 3-days prior to the event. Or they'll have to be patient; it won't change much.

Sure. If for no other reason than this isn't do much a many/few discussion as it is an overwhelming majority/minuscule minority discussion.

Could I be completely wrong and there are, instead, a large amount of BNet users that don't have cell phones with some sort of texting function? Yes. However that is highly unlikely these days.

I believe what evilcam could mean by harsher punishments could mean that a user who has been a repeat offender of breaking the rules(I mean just breaking the rules which you should never break like posting trademarked content and claiming it as your own sort of thing) would be dealt with swift justice, no excuses when you are IP perma-banned, you can't make alt accounts and your alt accounts are banned as well unless perma banning already does this.

That's a terrible idea. If this site required a mobile phone number I would never even have made an account. To be perfectly honest if it was a new requirement I'd rather delete my account than add my number.

A large number of people feel the same way. Also, your statistic that everyone on this forum owns a mobile phone is inaccurate. I didn't have a phone when I first signed up and neither did most of the community. People don't like to align their identity with online profiles.

Punishment Idea for Evilcam:

Users who break the rules will be put under very harsh profanity filters, so that even if one word gets the -blam!-, then all words turn to -blam!-. And if someone misspells a word, excluding Blam, then the word turns into a different thing, like -Kabam!-. This is only for people who have broken the Code of Conduct.

Uh not really going to solve anything at all. I can have unlimited access to phone numbers(you know that SIM cards are free right atleast here they are)If there is a troll that wants to make an alt they will find a way.
