I'm sure some of you are probably familiar with this structure of topic/post organisation where the new posts added to an existing topic can quickly be accessed, but more importantly, can be renamed to start a "sub topic" of the original one.

That structure is just awful. I can't stand it. I don't really understand why anyone likes it.

To me the idea of branching and subtopics (especially if at all like the example) is a confusing mess, but to each his own I guess.

Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar.
tenn' Ambar-metta!

I support this, as long as it works for the mods and doesn't confuse them.

I do agree with BBB about the idea of this becoming a bit too much, and becoming distracting in and of itself, I think you need to consider two things:

1. Users here wouldn't use this sub-topic tool all that much, and you wouldn't find it cluttering up a thread at all. This would prove to be less distracting, and also provide those that would need this feature an easy group to talk with in their sub-topic. The point here is quite simple: If you use the feature, you really only want to talk to those who are willing to think enough to use the feature too. If a user has no longing to use this feature, they will probably not be willing to give much thought to their discussions. Of course, that is a bit of an assumption, and should not be taken at face value.

2. We are, sooner or later, going to receive an influx of new users, and with new users, come plenty of topics. With this tool, perhaps we can cut back on repeat topics, or similar topics. Take for example the stat here about topics and you can see that we are plagued with repeat topics.

Both are just minor concerns that would promote the idea at hand. I do think that if it were to be considered, serious aesthetic discussion should be had, as actual implementation of the tool should be done right the first time. Aesthetically, the looks of this tool can make or break it's usefulness for a lot of users.

When I grow up I want to be bitter and spiteful.

"i liked the reality where everything was on fire better"
-legato on remedial chaos theory

If such a thing were implemented I would desire very clear circumstances outlined in the rules by which something would either be considered derailing or subtopic.

I don't like more gray areas but I will admit for once I like your suggestion daza.

How would it cut back on repeat topics? Say you didn't click on a sub topic link because you were only interested in the main topic. Then you post the same content as the sub topic as a new topic.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I am sorry but that second picture really confused me. I like how Bungie.net is now, simple and easy to browse.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that. I find the collapsable topic replies to be quite the eyesore.

Then it's a matter of compensating for incompetence. What would fix that is to have the sub-topics be placed in a way so that a user may know what the sub-topic is about, and then a user can decide if it is relevant to them or not from there. THAT would eliminate some repeat-threads for sure.

Ah, someone leaked. Now to find the leak and.... plug it.
With justice.

I use coup 5
Never Played halo 1 = Invalid opinion
Bloom isn't whats broken, its your idea of what good is and your opinion
Thats like saying uber nerf armor lock because like 20 percent of the community hates it. Oh wait..................

Interesting thoughts,
I think this might be implemented best from the main forum page.
Lets say you open up the community forums and see a thread about bungie day.

Bungie day guys - by ---
>>> Bungie day swag
>>> Bungie day puzzle

then under that thread there are 2 more thread names
bungie day swag, and bungie day puzzle/ indented under it.
these sub heddings would move along with the main topic however cross sub heading quoting would not be possible.

A post in any of these bound topics would keep it on the front page.

could however lead to a new form of bumping

i think the op should have the ability to approve the sub areas but their creator gets OP over the sub topic.
