Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts, absolutely.
This is where I am confused.
If you remember, at the end of Halo 2, Master Chief comes back to Earth in the Forerunner ship that contains the Prophet of Truth. The commander of the Human fleet (I forgot his name lol) speaks to the Chief, about what he is doing, finishing the fight, yayra, woohoo, go Humans. BUT: In the background of the Forerunner ship, the battle in space is still commencing. So there is no way that the Covenant took over Earth while the Chief was gone, because if they did, there would be no space battle still raging on.
So I ask: when did the Covenant invade? The Elites obviously know that the rings are going to kill them, and that the Chief isn't exactly the "Demon" they thought he was, so don't you think that the Elites would have called off the attack before the invading commenced? I mean, people watch the trailer, see that New Mombasa has been destroyed, but people jump to conclusions too fast before thinking. If you recall on the fourth level (or third, depending if you count the cutscene in the beginning), Metropolis, at the end, the Covenant cruiser jumped into Slipspace inside the city, and it shows the explosion demolishing New Mombasa. So, the invasion would have had to commence AFTER that, and AFTER the last level, because the space battle is still going on.
This is my conclusion: the Covenant didn't invade Earth. Rumors of the Covenant Civil War reached the ears of the attack force, and since there was no Prophet with the attack force, because Mercy, and Regret are both dead, and Truth is gone, so there is no REAL leader left, except for the Arbiter, who knows the truth about the rings. Who do you think the Elites would follow; the Prophets, who have disappeared and dropped their services to the Brutes, or the Arbiter, who is an Elite, and knows the truth about the rings? So, in conclusion, I do not think that the Covenant invaded and conquered Earth, but they HELPED the Humans by joining forces with them, and trying to stop the Prophet of Truth from presumably activating the rings, starting the "Great Journey", and killing all sentient life in the universe.
Flame away.
