Agree or disagree?
Why?

I feel they do. Threads with polls will almost always generate less discussion due to the fact that anybody can answer the question with a single anonymous vote, won't need to post, and as a result, won't lead to people replying to an answer which has interested them.

I love you [b]

Disagree I do, polls generate blind values that give discression necessary for privacy to exist thus starting conversation.

hmmmmmmm......

They should count to helping bump a thread, even if it's only half as much as a post. But you are correct there, they do in fact hurt threads, especially in The Flood.

  • 07.25.2012 8:36 AM PDT

You should have added a poll to this thread.

Not with a bang but a whimper.

You should have added a poll to this thread...

OT: I agree. Many people will simply enter and vote rather than actually post to reiterate their opinion. Rather the opposite of the real world where most people never vote but are more than happy to share their opinion.

Key

Everytime I see someone upset about the possible addition of a like system because it'll reduce discussion in some way, I just think of the fact that they're totally okay with the poll feature. While the like feature gets rid of "this" posts, the poll feature get's rid of the entire discussion of the thread in question if the user so chooses to use the poll and nothing else. The whole point, usually, in a poll thread is to simply pick from a list of options to express and accurately represent your opinion, and if people can do so without having to explain their opinion or be prompted to do so by other members, that's all the better for them.

Polls kill discussions, and that's why I tend to not use them.*

*Thought sometimes I do use them and those threads have done okay so maybe I'm just amazing at creating threads.**

Unless it's a versus thread, in which case people love to verbalize just how much of an expert they are on the undeniable empirical evidence they have to add credence to their assertion that Goku would in fact kick Superman's ass in a fight.

Meh I see what your saying but I think people will usually vote and leave because the thread isn't interesting enough for them to want to put their opinion, so they just vote and leave.

I was about to write the game thing but you beat me to it.....gg

  • 07.25.2012 8:42 AM PDT

I agree, with a poll people can vote and leave without posting any kind of justification.

I guess a way to fix this is, you can only vote if you post with your vote. Just like we can't post empty posts, you can't vote if its a post-less vote. Hopefully that makes sense.

If it's a thread comparing Gears of War to Call of Duty, and those are the options, what's to stop people from just posting "Call of Duty" or "Gears of War" without giving any explanation at all? That just creates spam which bumps a thread probably full of equally spam posts.

Ideally, that would be a solution. But think about the population of this site.
All you would get is X ammount of posts with their one word answer to the poll, and maybe something of sense amongst the others.
It would just create spam and unnecessary thread bumping for the most part.

I disagree.
Discussion in a poll thread normally derails the poll.
There should be some way that a 'vote' bumps the thread rather than a post to keep it active on the first page.

It really depends on what topic you're writing about in the end, same as any other thread. A controvercial poll will generate the same ammount of discussion as a controvercial topic, so writing a good OP is always important. I can definitely see how it could hurt though, but perhaps you're just seeing the effects of the lurkers who would otherwise not have responded to your thread anyways.

Personally, I feel that polls as they exist now could use a ton of revamping. A poll should be a tag, not a thread type, just like bolded, italic, and underlined words. This would allow the user to place polls anywhere in their thread, not just at the top, which is good because sometimes you want people to read prior to voting, or you could have them vote on specific sections of your thread, or you could have multiple polls for your thread.

Not to mention, this tag based poll should be designed in a way so that our only restriction on possible options is the number of characters we have to work with. It's not like generating the percentiles is anything more complex than simple division, and if a person fills a thread with hundreds of poll options, how is that any different than someone filling a thread completely with gibberish every line?

[poll][title]What do you think of my idea?[/title]
[option]I think it's rad![/option]
[option]It sucks![/option]
[option]I live in a giant bucket[/option]
[option]I am meh about it in general.[/option]
[option]Terrible idea.[/option]
[option]Could use work[/option]
[option]Implement this now![/option]
[option]Huzzah![/option]
[option]Waffles have more surface area than Pancakes![/option]
[/poll]

What is stopping people from doing that now? We get those type of responses all the time, I don't believe it would change too much with what I posted. If people are spamming they'll eventually get banned and hopefully they'll learn their lesson.

I think that the only way for your vote to be submitted would be a post to go along with it, plus a little description for why you picked that option.

  • 07.25.2012 9:43 AM PDT

In terms of managing a community, I have always found polls to be an effective means of arriving at a consensus. They are also a good vehicle for soliciting input from lurkers who don't want to explain their opinions at length.

i feel the sameway. I tend not to make polls.

  • 07.25.2012 9:44 AM PDT

I've made plenty of polls that have had excellent discussions.

  • 07.25.2012 9:45 AM PDT

On second thought though, if we make polls tag-based, then what happens when you quote the poll? As it is now, the quote button simply copies everything the other user wrote, that could be problematic if that created duplicate polls. Would the quote function simply need to be changed so that it doesn't copy the poll over, or is there a way we could make it so that referring to a poll of a prexisting name in a thread simply displayed the original poll rather than creating a new poll?

Webteam figure it out!

  • 07.25.2012 9:51 AM PDT

Usually, if I see a poll, I read the title and think about what I want to say before I read the OP. Then I read the OP and adjust what I want to say accordingly. Voting in the poll is usually an afterthought.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Polls do not damage discussion. People who want to make their voice heard will do so regardless of a poll option.

The real problem is that threads that are conducive to polling are usually not conducive to discussion. If you're trying to "survey" a forum by asking a question that can be fully and completely answered with a one- or two-word answer (such as "yes" or "no"), it doesn't matter whether there is a poll or not -- your thread sucks and will not encourage discussion.

If you're going to have a poll option on your thread, ensure that users cannot fully and completely respond to the thread simply by clicking on the poll. I could try to provide some examples if you want, but I really think this is self-explanatory.

Indeed. There is no venue through which to express my opinion!

OT: People like polls. People who need more than a poll will post. People who see poll results have more to post about.

I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.

If a thread is only asking a simple question, I'm probably not going to post regardless of whether or not there's a poll.
