Subject: Foreign Language on Bnet

Ya know, ever since I've joined there's been this "kill on site" approach with people who post in a foreign language...why is that?

  • 07.26.2012 7:11 AM PDT

The majority of people here speak English, so it helps with everyone being able to understand all posts.

EDIT: hit submit too early...

Of course a translator could be used, but that works both ways.

Why don't they use Google Translate to turn their language to English?

Sadly Google translate is not as good as you think.

No it's not but it covers pretty basic stuff.

This could go on forever, to keep it short - Your language is -blam!- and USA is dominate.

True, but that's stupid. You don't up and change everything for one person, simply because he doesn't want to post in the language the site he's in uses. You don't learn your waiter's language when he can't understand your order.

EDIT: Does that even make sense? Tch, I'm taking a power nap.

Yes, take a power nap.

That's a pretty great analogy.

But I do learn the language of country I'm going to so I never have that problem.

You just ruined your own argument. You (users) should learn the language of the country (Bungie.net) you are visiting.

New member do serve the Mythics after all.

Anyways, Bungie is an English Speaking developer. Most of their moderators speak only [don't contradict me you bilingual bastards] English. The people already here? Everybody speaks English regardless of a second language. It's the common point. It'd be silly to change that unless Bungie decided to really go international. In which case I'd wager they'd just put news in other languages (can toilet humor translate well in Weekly Updates?) and leave the forums as is.

Actually I wasn't defending it at all, especially since it serves no productive purpose...this thread was more to identify the reason for the harsh treatment brought against those who do happen to post in a foreign language.

Having multiple languages just splinters the community, it's pretty pointless.

As do private chapters...and elitism, and racism, and politics, and religion, etc...

There are many powers in the world, for good or for evil. Some are greater than I am. Against some I have not yet been measured. But my time is coming.

It's not harsh. It's preventing chaos.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

I agree with the user being required to post in English, but this analogy is shocking. Going to a foreign country and expecting them to all speak your language is just ridiculous. If the waiter can't understand your order, it is your fault, not his.

I have no idea where the hell this other country is coming from. There is no other country. You and the waiter are in the same country (Bnet), and English is is the native tongue here. There is no other language.

Private chapters bring people closer. I have no idea what you're talking about. Elitism, racism, that's fairly obvious. Politics, religion, these really don't create the schism so much as the person.

OP is just making a thread to be silly, he's not providing any reasons why there should be multiple languages just "why not?". Might as well lock it.

This. You can translate something from example Latin to English, then double-verify its correctness by translating it from English back to Latin, and it is different.
And that's why it's easier if all of us speak in English.

Have you ever head the story of the Tower Of Babel. No mater if you believe in GOD or not, (trying my best to keep religion out of this), there is an important lesson to be learned.

When the people started out TOGETHER to build the tower up to the heavens, they all spoke one language. Then GOD decided to make them all speak in different languages so they lost their UNITY.

If we all speak in one language we can conquer the world, place all the enemies into a sling-shot, and cast thoes suckers into the Sun.

That is my take on the matter. It is all about UNITY!
