The fact that in halo games there are no spartans as of yet (maybe never), is because in the books they died! people who say 3 are alive i cant remeber but i think they all died. one form plasma nade or elite plasma rifle. one left on a planet which gets glassed. one left on covenant ship and dies. one floats into space and dies. thats 4 dead. MC only one left.

In First Strike you read how several spartans survive. Also, people tend to forget about the two spartans that never were on Reach in the first place.

But once again: i doubt that there will be another Spartan besides the Chief (except for co-op and multiplayer obviously)

...sigh. Do you know how many spartans there were in the first place? More than 5...

There very well could be other spartans alive.

TRUE.

NOT true. Linda is still alive in the books, plus at least 3 others. read opog's theories on this stuff. he has proof.

and btw, if the books had nothing to do with the game, why does bungie collaborate with the authors? if the game was totally independent from the books, then the books could just be fanfiction that got published.

Master Chief and that group of Spartans is the Spartan II project. We don't know much about the original Spartan project, and the group being trained after Master Chief were the Spartan III's, who probably died when Reach was glassed.

Loads and loads of super soldiers. They could just make the normal troops better and that would keep me happy.

the only problen with that is that only a couple hundred were made.

so that is why it says official on all the books, why the writers worked close to bungie, because the books are not related to the games, in what FAQ is that, and in Halo CE it is belived that he is the last one left, it doesn't in the entire game of Halo 2 say that he is the last one, in Metroplis, why does the marine say "when I asked for reinforcment, I didn't think they'd send a Spartan"? not "I didn't think they'd send you"

Let me rephrase. The story in the games and the stories in the books are collobarated within the Halo universe. Yeah, the devs and the writers talked to keep things syncronized within the Halo universe in order to keep the stories from butting heads and completely fragmenting from Bungie's vision they have for the games. The books give backstory and elaborate on Bungie's orginal storyline which is in the games, not in the books. That means the books have to be liscensed. That's a huge difference between fanfic. Star Wars does the same thing.

The books are canon. They are the same story as the game. They are defining elements the Halo Universe. Anything from the books could end up in the game, as the books are canon.

You're wrong... you're just plain wrong. Don't knock down what people say until you have some actual evidence. At the end of First Strike there are 5 Spartans alive (John, Linda, Kelly, Fred and Will), although Kelly is off somewhere in a ONI stealth craft with Dr. Halsey (en-route to the coordinates she found in Ackerson's notes, no doubt). As far as Spartans being in Halo 3 or not being in halo 3, Bungie can do whatever they please with their story. The Halo video-game story, the books and most likely even the upcoming movie are all based on the "Halo Bible," the collection of fiction that everything is based upon. That being said, Bungie must appeal to all of it's fans, the die-hard and the casual. Other Spartans suddenly popping up in-game could only muddle the storyline in the minds of those who have yet to read the books. There's much more room for information in the books than in a relatively short video-game, due to this, some of the harder to explain things have to be left out in order for the story to be clear and understandable to the player.

In short, other Spartans do exist in the Halo universe. Whether Bungie decides to show them or not is up to Bungie. Would adding Spartans to Halo 3 cause confusion if not properly explained (something that is difficult to do in a short game time)? I believe so, but Bungie has surprised us all before.

Bungie planned out the whole Halo story and blueprinted it in the Halo Bible. The authors of the Halo novels, used the Halo Bible to write their books. Thus, the books and the games are in every way related.

What's all the commotion about more Spartans? Picture them like Marines in a tin can suit. There'll be legions more Covenant to fill with lead so you might as well welcome a helping hand or at least have them appear somewhere. Why is what you read in the books any different from playing the game?

That's only if they were actually on Reach : )

We know that Mendez was training them, and we know from reading First Strike that Dr. Halsey and Kelly are going to a location that they found in Ackerson's files that also included the word CPOMZ. CPO Mendez, maybe? It's a possibility.

At the end of First Strike, Tartarus and prophets are mentioned. So books and games HAVE a relation.

I agree, but no new characters, mabye new characters playable, but that would just be lame if there were no new enemies.

But then again I don't agree because the books have everything to do with the games. What fills in the gaps.....

I agree. The whole premise of the game is that he is the LAST Spartan. When talking about the games keep to what is in the games. Bungie has said before that they will not collaborate the books with the games because not everybody who plays the games reads the book or vice versa. Simple. As. That. Period.

Actually, he believed he was the last SPARTAN. REACH was being glassed when he left, and the only other Spartan on board was Linda..she was dead and frozen in cryo.

I can assume that, on the planet coral, another huge battle will occur and he will be seperated from the SPARTANS again, but (hinted at in the Conversations in the universe, Forerunner tech is on Coral) they won't be totally glassed..once again. We can see some in halo 3.

To the topic starter, the books are cannon to the Halo universe...look at everything that originated in the books..did these confuse you?

* Tartarus
* The Arbiter
* The Prophet of Truth
* Lord Hood

* The Covenant Flagship; Ascendant Justice

* Covenant A.I.s

* Race: Prophets
* Race: Brutes

* Cortana; going whacky (it's hinted at at the end of H2, and in the H3 trailer)

* Johnson; Escaped Halo's blast

* Battle Rifle
* Brute shot
* SMG
* Magnum
* Archer missile pods
* Orbital MAC cannons

* New feature: Dual Wielding

* Time warping crystal; we experience it's effects in Halo 2.

* Ships; dual core, spinning reactors as seen on the PoA; not mentioned in the game but in the book

* Slipspace; jumping from inside an atmosphere

Point is, things from the books will be implemented, and will not need a huge intro. Look at Tartarus, or the Arbiter, or the Prophets

Common sense can tell us most of how and who they are; a cinematic will explain the rest.

Also, It's said that Chief never sees Mendez again, that might mean that he was evacuated with the Spartan III's to a different planet for training.

omg wtf in fall of reach spartans die! ok here are the actuall quotes from book saying so!
one-linda "a bolt of plasma struck her in the back. Another bolt of fire blazed her from the upper decks and splashed accross her front. She crumbled-her shields flickered and went out. two more bolts hit her chest . A third blast smashed into her helmet." Erm she dead now :-)
two-james "james almost had the explosives rigged to the nose free. A shower of needes hit him. One stuck the tank of his thruster harness-penetrated. It remained embedded for a split second...the exploded." now thats two. :-)
i'll givew the rest later gtg. but also it says "i lost a man" something about floating in space then "the worst death, for a spartan, floating helplessly. Fighting an enemy that cant be beat". thats 3

active Spartans is as follows:

John-117
Frederic-104
Linda-058
William-043
Kelly-087 (abducted by Halsey)
The 3 away on distant missions

come on, it's the 360 we are talking about, it got power, and they will most certainly use it to tell some backstory if they add some spartans.

EDIT:

Also alive, but not active, are the 12 crippled from surgery and the one too wounded to continue active duty, for a total of 21.

Several others are listed MIA but may yet realistically resurface if the story demands it; their "deaths" occcured under foggy enough circumstances (such as James et al.)

There are more being trained but they have yet to be specifically mentioned or seen by anyone ("...he had overheard Dr. Halsey mention that Chief Mendez was training another group of Spartans. He had never seen them..." FoR Ch.24)

And, as Eric Trautmann once responded:

"Re: Spartan strength: I am aware that there is an APPARENT discrepancy between the reported number of Spartans and the ACTUAL number of Spartans.

Emphasis on APPARENT. ;)

We leave lots of hooks for future development buried in the text, to accomodate several ideas/stories we have percolating. Some may see the light of day, some may not.

In general, its best to chalk such discrepancies up to "the fog of war" and if we get the chance, we've got a great explanation for the apparent discontinuity."
