There are a handful of users whom I recognize upon seeing their posts, but could hardly remember them by name otherwise. If that counts for something.
I think unless you are either a moderator or a serious pillar of discussion in a certain forum (i.e. a "true Floodian"), meaning you contribute on a daily basis for an extended period of time, notoriety is not something you are going to experience.
I'd say I was part of a fairly tight-knit community in my more activity-heavy days (when I was here on a daily basis), but after a while, with everything going on my life I found it difficult to find the motivation to come here anymore. So now I just swing by every couple of months in my free time, see what's up, chat a bit on the forums, et al. It's pleasant (mostly), but I've since lost that personal feeling of community.
And that's not to say that "if you have the time to visit B.net every day you need to get a life mister and get your priorities straight and why don't you have a job yet and you need to focus on your academics and look at Johnny down the street from us he's really got his life together and hurr durr durr." First of all, screw Johnny. He's an ass. Secondly, it's all about personal priorities. I, personally, just found myself in a position where I couldn't make this site a priority anymore, but if you choose to keep it prioritized, that's entirely your prerogative, and more power to you.
