Subject: Bungie Data Crunchers Idea

Let say Bungie needed a data server farm or cluster to crunch a lot of data for a game. Instead of that, why not disperse the data crunching to the member computers.

Even if each user, in the current population of Bungie.net, crunched 100 KB of data it would amount to a lot of data calculated on their servers they have now. They could migrated the incoming data to a secured location.

What do you think about this idea? Would this even work? Thoughts?

Subject: Bungie Community, Wanna Crunch Some Data?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Bungie has big boy pants. Why would they go back to diapers?

For once I agree. I have no idea what this thread is about.

Bye.

He's proposing that to create more powerful servers we essentially provide virtual memory for them to use. So if every user allowed 100kb that adds up to ??GB of outsourced computing power while still letting our computers run smoothy

Unless I'm confused too. :-)

Breach of privacy and information. Unless they would agree to those types of terms, which they probably wouldn't. And I'm pretty sure most people would not like to download data every time they want to see there stats, leaderboards, etc.

And
They could migrated the incoming data to a secured location.

Then whats the point of data crunching on members computers in the first place? The current way of keeping data is better, effective, and cheaper.

Lol, networking.

Average minds discuss events

Small minds discuss people

What I'm getting is some kind of crowdsourcing initiative from our computers. The best way I know how to explain how this is a powerful tool isto show you a Cracked article.

Basically, Bungie could use the processing power of all of our computers to create a type of supercomputer to do stuff. Instead of physically linking up computers, they are just linked through the Internet.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

I'm pretty sure they won't turn to their fanbase into a workforce. They don't need to.

This does remind me of the time Cryptic attempted to make a database of every group on B.net.

This is an example of grid computing, where each member's computer would (hypothetically) be running some kind of client program to communicate with the Bungie server. Some people have probably heard of SETI@home (Search for Extra Terrestrial Life) or LHC@home (Large Hadron Collider), which operates the same way (you can download a client and use your leftover CPU cycles and bandwidth to contribute to research).

Two problems (at least):

1) For the number of members who would download and run something like this, it's probably not going to make much difference. I can't imagine there would be too many people who would want to run something like this to view stats, for instance (and those data points probably aren't going to require any processing once they're at the server-side (eg. after being transferred from a console)).

2) When you look at existing global distributed systems like the ones I mentioned above, you're looking at massive amounts of data processing from scientific applications (eg. predicting weather patterns, particle physics, etc...) that can't be processed in the one place (and given the size of CERN's computing power, you can probably imagine the scale of it). So what would Bungie be doing that would require extra computational power?

Totally infeasible, IMO.

Could have been used for rendering videos from Theater.

Listen to our podcast and listen to us talk about the latest Bungie news and Halo: Reach updates!

When I grow up, I want to be just like goofenhour.

I really doubt it. I think Bungie has enough server power on there side to do the data farming. They managed to crunch all the stats from when they finally let go of the Halo servers, I think they can do it themselves.

Absolutely not. I'm almost 100% certain that they used XDKs to render the films and export it to the servers, from there they take the videos and upload it to there own video hosting service, which nearly no part is required for the user to do any kind of processing.

Only way you could do that is if you managed to get a developer license from Microsoft, $10,000 SDK license, managed to purchase yourself a $2,000 Dev Kit, and Bungie decides to release the modified debug version of Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach to allow you to convert videos from theater to a .wmv format. It would never happen.

Sorry guys for overly complicating my idea and stating possibly too much computing power. I will try to explain a little more:

Bungie has some data they need to be calculated. May require a lot of computing power; I don't know.

People sign up to be "Bungie Data Crunchers." Bungie put's what they need in a working database and they implement coding into participating user accounts which calculate specific sections of the database as they surf bungie.net:

- Group A.1 users calculate section A.1 of database
- Group A.2 users calculate section A.2 of database
- Group B users calculate section B of database
- Group C users calculate section C of database
- And so on...

If they make it to where one user only calculates a minute amount of data in the database, it shouldn't slow down browsing too much but at the same time while there are a lot of people crunching it could amount up to a lot being processed.

Just about the same as signing up to be a Beta Tester and collecting data while playing their game.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

I would not participate. Why? Because I already have my computer running Folding@Home while not in use, and I honestly think that is more important than simply helping a company work on a product.

Don't get me wrong, though, I love the idea of distributed computing.

-edit- My greed would compromise my morals, however, if Bungie offered some kind of non-important, superficial reward of some kind for participation.

-edit^2- I would be interested to see the computing power of the Bungie community if we applied ourselves (and by that, I mean time and computers). We could create a F@H team and see how that goes, as it would show us the power of our community combined and actually do some good. DeeJ, I assume you are using your omniscient powers to read every post on these here forums, do you think that this would be a worthwhile and interesting challenge (or event)?

-edit^3- If anyone cares, I created a group for F@H (both on Bungie.net and with F@H), so we can talk about it and keep tabs on how we're doing. Bungie Group, F@H Stats
