Don't bring subjectivity into this at all. "dull and monotonous" is only your opinion and cannot be quantified nor proven consistently with data or evidence. Dull is subjective. Monotonous is not. Variety in gameplay can be quantified, researched, studied, and objectified.
We stick with the battle rifle because it works. We don't use the other weapons because the battle rifle works better. That is a false statement I'm afraid. You use the Battle Rifle because it works. But no, you do not use it because it works 'better.' You use it because it's sufficient against a large number of other weapons. Quantity over quality, if I may.
You are under the impression that quantity = variety. It does not.
If we had 10 weapons that all filled the same niche but had different colors and slightly different stats (rate of fire, spread, ammo, etc.), the smart and logical thing to do would be to equip the one with the best stats out of the 10. Using each one of the 10 is not what affords the player his variety. It's rather how versatile the weapon itself is. Variety in Halo weapons exists within a weapon's effectiveness, not the amount of weapons used themselves.
Since the Battle Rifle is versatile , it allows us to approach a variety of situations differently, thereby making encounters different. And because we can assist our teammates across the map, clean headshots, and defend ourselves off of spawn, it makes sense why it is the 'go to' weapon.
I wont deny that the H3 BR overpowered the rest of the sandbox (or rather, the rest of the sandbox was underpowered). What I will say though is that even if the weapon was balanced, it would still be chosen over niche, CQB weapons because it is simply more versatile, and by extention, affords the user different forms of combat. You can't say the same for a CQB niche weapon.
