Subject: Why there should be no profanity filter

Every member of the Covenant shall walk the path. None will be left behind when our Great Journey begins. That is the Prophets' age-old promise, and it shall be fulfilled!

No one cares about cursing.

Some human body parts are blocked, so we can't discuss anything about anatomy.

Some words are blocked for no reason.

Most mods don't even ban people who bypass it. And when they do, it's for a stupid reason.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

I care about cursing.

This isn't a science forum.

The profanity filter is from an old microsoft list.

What mods do or do not do is not really my concern as long as I follow the rules.

  • 07.29.2012 11:40 PM PDT

The only way I'll accept the removal of the filter is if I can have the right to tell members to eat a grenade if I don't like them.

False. Bungie does.

Some human body parts are blocked, so we can't discuss anything about anatomy.Yeah, because that comes up a lot and THAT'S really one of the driving reasons of why you want it removed.

Some words are blocked for no reason.Name one.

Most mods don't even ban people who bypass it.Example? Proof?

And when they do, it's for a stupid reason.No... it isn't. The reason is that they evaded the profanity filter. That's a perfectly legitimate reason. Have you read the rules? It's very clearly an illegal act.

  • 07.29.2012 11:41 PM PDT

On a serious note, Bungie cares about cursing and honestly, I don't want to see a wall of f-bombs...it's really distasteful.

The first respondent to this thread.

Evade in groups all you want.

Describe the nature of that word so I know which one you're referring to.

No. Link me.

All rules are breakable.

Stop complaining. you only made one good point and people would still use it the wrong way.

No one cares about cursing.

your opinion is not shared by everyone on bnet.

Some human body parts are blocked, so we can't discuss anything about anatomy.

agreed, but people will still use all of those word in the wrong way.

Some words are blocked for no reason.

and you really need to use those few words?

changes nothing.

What do you gain from swearing on a forum?

  • 07.29.2012 11:54 PM PDT

Bungie.net is an extension of Bungie as a business and must maintain a level of professionalism.

You probably got banned for bypassing the profanity filter and are just angry. But if you start letting the rules slide, this will turn into 4chan. Bungie.net differs from other forums because you can have a civilized conversation here. Anybody who requires swearing to interact with others is uncivilized. This is a videogame developers website. A place of Business. They are nice enough to let us interact with each other here. We need to return the favor by keeping the site safe for work. Also, I HIGHLY doubt you actually come here to talk about anatomy or even really care about that. You are most likely just using it as an excuse to bolster your argument. You want to swear? Go somewhere else. And for the record, I DO care about swearing, as evident by this explosion of walloftext syndrome.

tl;dr

No.

I agree with this, and a very clear and intelligent theory I have for life.

I honestly have no problem with cursing, it is just a part of life for people to curse. But my one thing about it is simple. If you're cursing, then you must not be smart enough to have a larger vocabulary.

There are thousands of words in the English language. With each curse word, there are plenty of others to pick from, and in fact, you can create a sentence so complex in structure, so well crafted, that no matter how the intended person reads it, they will be insulted to their very fiber. And you can do that without using a single curse word.

It's not so hard a concept in the end. We are here, on Bungie.net, using the fine forums of our lovely host at Bungie. They simply request we follow a couple rules, and then we can go about our way chatting up the world.

I don't see why it is so hard to just accept the rules, and move along. If you do not like them, then feel free to go to another website, you know? It's all really not that hard to understand.

What a waste....

The word for people who like people of the same gender seems to come up a lot and it's synonyms come up a lot in a non-insulting context.

If we want words like that to stop being insults, we should stop treating them as such.

Hello
He used not a single valid reason behind his argument about how someone who curses lacks vocabulary. All he did was reference his own experiences, and spoke of "the couple people he knew with quite the large vocabulary."

Not to mention, you just used a comedian for proof. If anything, comedians will undoubtably be the most vulgar people of society, because being vulgar gets you laughs.

Yes, cursing can feel good, and it may be fun. You can be silly when you curse and you can be cool. But in the end, this is not you and your buds sitting down for a pint, this isn't even close to a good old game of Halo with your friends.

This is Bungie's website, and they want things to be kept clean. Arguing that fact is mundane and futile, there is no point in struggling against this rule.

As opposed to the extensively cited evidence for your own theory. Well done, you clearly won that round eh?

Take your pick. Any word you want the simile of, feel free to Google that one.

No one cares about cursing.Actually, a lot of people do. Especially the parents of all the kids that visit Bungie.net.

Some human body parts are blocked, so we can't discuss anything about anatomy. Here, borrow my thesaurus.

Some words are blocked for no reason. You know just as well as I that these words weren't randomly selected for filtering.

Most mods don't even ban people who bypass it.Actually, moderators probably ban every user they see who bypasses the profanity filter, although they aren't forced to.

And when they do, it's for a stupid reason. If you bypass the profanity filter, you are obviously going out of your way to break a rule! Ugh, perhaps this can better explain it.

I'm confused. You asked for proof that someone could come up with a different way of expressing what they feel, or a different word in the place of a curse word.

I give you the dictionary (albeit, on the internet) and yet you refuse my proof. What is wrong with more words than just one? What is this, 1984? We must only confine specific feelings and moments in our lives to a select few curse words?
