Halo 2. Or CE.

People are saying ODST, but I disagree completely.

-Story was a straightforward detective hunt through a city. No major plot twists (aside from the Engineer), and it lacked the Covenant perspective completely.
-No explanation for the artifact Truth found at the end. People often overlook this.
-A squad reuniting in a deserted city had up most of the game. I wouldn't call that the best Halo story.
-Actual significance to Halo storyline is yet to be seen. The Engineer has not been mentioned, ever, as far as I can remember.

ODST was good, it had good atmosphere, setting, etc, but I would consider a quality story on the actual plot, details, and THEN execution.

Halo 2 executed its story well. ODST had the better ruined atmosphere, but that is something I would relate to the level designers than the script writers.

Halo 2>ODST
Soundtrack and Story IMO.

Heavenly Demise - There is nothing to fear but fear itself

Halo 1 for me, just purely because of the fact that it was revolutionary and different to every other gamef or me. i was so blown away by halo i pretty sure i actually locked myself in my room for weeks. the storyline was amazing and the library level used to scare the -blam!- out of me.

Halo 1. The storyline was simple, balanced and satisfying. There was the familiarity of having Marine backups and human technology, the bizarre futuristic Covenant, the colossal mystery of the Halo and the terrifying reveal of the Flood was amazing.

I like all of the Halo game storylines but for me Halo 1 just blew me away.

True. The box art is misleading. Not only does ODST carry the tradition of the main character in the spotlight on the box art (begun by H2) but it's the opposite of gameplay, in which you play and see things from most of the squad (Reach's box art is also misleading. Most of the time it is 'lone wolf stuff' and their sacrifices, other than Jorge's, didn't seem like they were for a bigger cause, just an isolated one). Nonetheless, at least it did a good job with the team. They weren't necessarily generic like Noble Team. The fight with the Chieftain is especially memorable.

I'm glad H4 is returning to the CE style of box art, where it's not just about Chief. If H2 Anniversary arrives, I hope it's box art isn't going to be generic like CEA's. I want to see defending of Earth (though there are only 2 missions that do that) and Arby on it.

Also, it was disappointing to find not a single dead Brute or Grunt or a single living marine or Elite on Mombasa Streets. Bungie really has issues making their locations believable.

*claps slowly*

This, this!

I liked CE for being convincingly futuristic, even if it's tank was crap.

I loved Halo 2 story, even if it had that cliffhanger at the end.

ODST.

The level of sophistication in ODST's story is on-par with that of Bioshock (except without Bioshock's compelling and beautifully developed characters).

I'll agree ODST has a great story. There is no putting that into question... but putting it on par to Bioshocks? The original Bioshock?

Never in a million years.

Halo multiplayer sucks!

Based on campaigns

Halo 2 > Halo 3 ODST > Halo 3 > Reach/CE tied

Wut?

There loads of dead brutes and grunts. You just need to look harder :P

Also, i agree about the halo 2 anniversary box art. Here's how I would imagine it

Chief firing from behind a civilian car with dual SMGs at thr Arbiter, and Arbiter behind a Covenant crate with dual plasma rifles firing at Chief. At the top, the Prophet of truth looks down on them both.

Now that I think of it, the mission where you get to play as Buck has some dead Elites. But I can't recall if there were dead Brutes as well.

Wouldn't that be implying they meet up as enemies? It'd also reveal Truth as the main antagonist.

Also, this is what I meant. But it'd also be misleading since battle for Earth doesn't pick up until H3.

I agree with you if we're talking about the actual story itself, but the sophistication of the storytelling is on-par with Bioshock's.

Bah. Making an allegory out of a 'classic' text doesn't equate to sophistication. If this was done with any contemporary text, it'd be called plagiarism. But because the source being used as a basis was written centuries ago, we call it literary genius.

I'm not a fan.

Instead, Bungie could have focused on crafting their own original story with deep, explored characters, dialogue that doesn't sound like it's been imported from a Kingdom Hearts game and a more relevant plot. ODST probably has the best storytelling in a Halo game - the way it's done with you as a detective of sorts discovering flashbacks and piecing it together is very nice, but the best storyline?

Please. Get your head out of Dante's arse.
