Subject: Bungie.net login system - Hotmail is retiring

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

Now I'm not sure if any of you have been paying much attention around the Microsoft side of things, but just today Microsoft just announced a new preview of what's coming down the road to replace "hotmail" with their new version of Outlook.

If you go to http://login.live.com/, you'll notice that it looks a little bit different. However, the plan is to eventually move EVERYONE away from the "@hotmail.com" extension.

The new Outlook is an entirely new webmail service, complete with @outlook.com domains. It doesn't replace Microsoft's Hotmail or Windows Live email service, but it is very easy to move your @hotmail.com or @live.com email address over to the new service.
Now the question: Will this effect Bungie.net's login system? With a new bungie.net innovation and facelift right around the corner, can we expect to see a new login system with Outlook rather than @hotmail?

Whether or not you like the change, eventually everyone will be forced over to the new service. Microsoft has had hotmail since 1997, and it's time for an upgrade.

If possibly even the webteam could shed some light on this, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Since I login with the WLID system I think I would just enter the new domain. I hope it's not too complicated of a conversion though.

I doubt Bungie would have to do much except make sure the emails are still current.

Ah gee, I hope this doesn't make too much of a mess. Perhaps the webteam already have something in mind though.

Bnet just uses the WLID, not the actual email address. So as long as the WLID is the same, it should be fine.

Ah! I remember Achronos mentioning that the only reason bungie.net uses WLID right now anyways, is because otherwise there would be no way to authenticate your LIVE gamertag. I still wonder if Xbox Live will eventually change their main system to Outlook rather than WLID. Only time will tell.

Either way, I still hope to see a new login system for bungie.net once the update hits.

That being said, we are very aware that the current implementation is... less than ideal. Part of the problem is interacting with systems outside of our control, but we can do better. Improving the sign in/identity/account management aspect of bungie.net is pretty high up on our list of "things we need to get better at".

Think about it - we want it to be very easy to join and have a positive experience in this community. If the sign in is in any way difficult, it turns people away. That is very bad.

I think we might see a change with the new site update. I guess we are going to have to wait and see.

You're confusing two seperate things - Windows Live ID (now know as Microsoft Accounts) and Hotmail.

Hotmail uses a Microsoft Account to authenticate, just like Bungie.net. So does Live.com email. So does the new Outlook. So does some modes of Windows 8. So does Xbox Live.

Underlying it all, though, are Microsoft Accounts. What's special about the Hotmail change is that normally, you cannot change the login name for Microsoft Accounts if they are hotmail or live.com email address. I'm pretty sure that the migration process will allow you to do so, but to bungie.net, you'll still be the same account.

Whatever the case - the key is Windows Account == Windows Live ID, but Hotmail/Live.com/Outlook != Windows Account, they just use them to authenticate.

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

You just shattered the world of everyone in this thread. 'grats.

Meh, Outlook sucks IMO. I would rather they simplify all of those services into one like they're doing, but instead integrate it into Live. All they would have to do is clean up Live's site and Windows Live Messenger (since it's terrible to use) and I'd be happy with using it all the time.

Trust me, using WLM is annoying. Plus the Xbox Ambassador bots for giving support don't even work most of the time.

Thanks for the clarification, I wasn't aware of two separate systems under the same "account".

I usually just refresh the session or notify Xbox Support and they can fix it. Sometimes it's just a matter of no one asking questions. But that's off topic, not meant for discussion here.

I don't know what's going on in this thread, to be honest. I'm totally confused.

But... since I don't use hotmail for my WLID/ Microsoft Account, I'm just going to close my eyes since I don't think this affects me.

You login with your WLID here.
Hotmail is no longer being supported.
Many people are going to need to change their email for WLID.
Therefore your email will change but your WLID profile will not.
Logging in here will consist of using your updated email from WLID when you change it.
Since it is the same WLID account, Bungie has to do nothing.

  • 07.31.2012 7:23 PM PDT

Bungie's not Microsoft's slave anymore, so I believe that they can accept a wide variety of different emails now.

EDIT: Just read other posts, ignore my response

Maybe we will be able to change usernames!!

  • 07.31.2012 8:49 PM PDT

I think I'm one of the "parents" the article was talking about... I had a hotmail address (not the same one I use now, though) before they were aquired by Microsoft.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I can't wait till we can change our sign in info and usernames hopefully.

If you login to outlook.com with your current WLID, @hotmail or @live account, you will have the opportunity to replace your WLID with a new @outlook.com account.

It is extremely easy to do this, but be aware that, in the case that you are using a hotmail or live e-mail, if you replace your WLID for an Outlook one, your old hotmail or live e-mail will no longer work. You will still receive e-mails sent to your old e-mail, but you will have to login using your new Outlook e-mail.

I now have to login to Bungie.net using my new Outlook e-mail, trying to login using my old @hotmail.com e-mail doesn't work because that e-mail no longer exists.

Edit: first post on the mains in 4 months.
