Subject: Whatever happened to No politcal and religious discussion?

Look at this! Don't but me, look at it! five pages (and counting) of whining and crying and insult throwing in every direction from every side. Seriously you got everything from :

"Hating America" to "Supporting terrorism" just from a Chicken restaurant.

Before you even say "Mods can't be everywhere" I will say that I REALIZE THAT. But my problem is that when a Mod finally does come in here, he's gonna lock the thread, Ban everyone who said mean things (yet he will probably only ban people on the side he opposes), and a new thread will just start up when he stops posting.

This isn't the first time it's happened, literally every time something happens in the news that's political makes LITERALLY every conservative, liberal, and independent on these forums freak out over each other.

I'm not suggesting anything other than everyone on The Flood grow up, even the older ones. But threads like these don't turn into this due to a lack of a Ninja. They're there because some members know which lines to cross, and then start running rampant miles away from it. What I would prefer is threads getting locked immediately if it looks to go into hot water. None of this "Wait and see" until someone steps on a land mine and gets banned when he would be fine if the thread was locked in the first place.

Stupidity, when sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic

I like the flood because I've learned to ignore those threads. If you can't do the same it's probably not the place for you.

I'm here for fun. I think it's fun seeing such things play out. Therefore I support 'wait and see.'

Also burrito for president (ZOMG POLITICAL DISCUSSION).

Remember: a vote for burrito is a vote for freedom.

If you look, the thread was perfectly fine until someone said one negative thing, then the whole thing went out of control. I want to discuss stuff like this, but not if someone is going to ruin the discussion for me.

I don't like that you think a Mod will ban those who have an opinion differing their own. That is not true.

When threads like this come up, instead of making a thread about it, just PM a Mod, and they can take care of it. The Mods have probably seen it, and have decided to just pick their battles here. Or are getting around to locking it. I don't know, I can't read their minds.

Simple fix, stay out of the flood.
Last time I was there, I got carpet banned even though I did nothing wrong.
Never again.

Never has been, never will be. I hope the Flood gets nuked soon. It's been like this the past week. Dox leak threats, religion, political business, spammers, and the Felicia incident.

Keeps tabs on the thread. And keep tabs on everyone that is in it. Some people will get the slap in the face by the Banhammer while others will not, despite saying equally or worse statements.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I saw the thread awhile ago, read the OP and the posts that existed at the time, and it looked fine. True there are political undertones, but I didn't see any when i looked. If its gone bad I'll take a look and deal with it as needed.

Though as you noted, another one will just crop up. I left that one alone because there was nothing worth locking ot for at the time, and to give them a catch all so they could talk about this stupid story about a damn restaurant.

I don't think the Flood should be nuked...if anything the mods should grab some popcorn and watch all the idiots offending each other and arguing that their opinion is the one and only true opinion (though I have seen some people make some level headed arguments and not resort to mindless flaming) while laughing with their endless source of amusement. If there are too many parody threads.....carpet ban. In the end it is all pointless e-drama. Then again this is just what I think of it. I know people would like some actual discussion in the flood....but usually things like this will eventually pass for a little while.

It's just a debate about a very real issue. I don't see anything wrong with it at all.

This isn't an argument about religion or politics, but an argument about equality. I don't think you should go into forum cop overdrive and lock the thread. Let it play out, and let people speak their minds.

I've looked over the thread and don't see much in the way of political/religious flaming. I don't think people disagreeing should be considered "flaming" either.

That comes down to how obviously trolling a post wil come across. But if you are right, and I hope you aren't, then we have a serious problem here. Still, I do not believe that is the case, but I will keep tabs, as you suggest.

  • 08.01.2012 6:34 PM PDT

There is one problem with that though. And it's the people who appear they're trolling. I have found times on the Flood where people (including me) have been banned from trolling when in actuality, we were not, we just had a huge amount of opposition. SO when the Mod goes in and sees one guy trying to defend himself from the attacks, that one guy looks to be the troll and then gets banned, and the people who should be getting red text have this feel of unwarented self importance.

Don't believe me? Think back to SOPA.

Oh man don't even remind me of that. That was horrible.

A quote from an non political post that could no way be interpreted as "flaming":

Because they're in a much less direct view of the nation compared to an apparently popular food chain. Tie both those points together, and it's perfectly within the American domain. Too lazy to care about something unless it's to do with fast food.
Not only is it political, as it comes down to how America handles it's protesting, but it's also a hugely false stereotype.

Because the word "American" is used it is considered political?

I would argue that among other points, but this isn't the place. I'm pretty disappointed that the thread was locked. It's an important topic and I thought people were generally (with exceptions) handling themselves well. I guess this is a video game forum first and foremost, but I think the discussion is well warranted and necessary.

EDIT: And I agree with the guy below me. This thread is terribly hypocritical.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

Reading through that thread, you were among the worst violators of "turning it into a political thread". It was an obvious attempt to stoke the fires and you gleefully took the bait. (And on a completely unrelated note, you should read up on the Constitution because you seem quite unaware of the rights it prohibits the government from denying you).

  • 08.01.2012 6:54 PM PDT

This is a major issue in society. People all over are talking about it. There's no way to stop it. We are Katrina. You are a levee. Your half assed approach to this will not work.

Talking about things like this is how we learn. Trying to stop any sort of discussion that might be able to be interpreted as "political" is about neither smart nor productive.

What should be happening is that the people who are flaming or trying to directly bring politics and religion isto the discussion should be dealt with, and the people who just want to have a clam, focused discussion should be left alone.

It would seem to me that the leash on political/religious discussions has considerably loosened. I seem to recall it being, in years past, that a thread that had any political or religious affiliation, regardless of meaning or context, was locked upon sight by a moderator, and most of its participants banned.

Seeing the progress of the Chick-Fil-A threads (and in particular, evilcam's stance on such topics) leads me to believe that the mods have become a bit more tolerant. Was there some kind of change in moderation, or does it just vary from mod to mod?

Or am I imagining things?

Key

Ban everyone who said mean things (yet he will probably only ban people on the side he opposes) LOL @ you assuming you know the way in which ninja's think when they ban people, especially when you assume they have such a biased and unfair viewpoint on the subject. You've clearly been banned for something like this before and are just using this excuse as a justification for "I didn't do anything wrong".
