Shiska: The Fall of Reach, The Flood, and First Strike are official books. Yes, Bungie had say in their writing Yes, the writers did some of their own work nothing was published without first receiving Bungie's approval.

However, what you fail to realize is that the books act as flavor for the hardcore. Guess what? Out of the millions that have bought and played the second Halo, only a tiny handful have actually READ these books. As such, it'd be unwise to reference the books directly in the game, as the reference would be obscure and misunderstood by the majority of players

The books enhance the games, not the other way around.

The mistake in your thinking is that Halo 1 doesn't "reference" anything that happened in The Flood. It's the other way around. And, Halo 1 didn't reference anything that happened during Fall of Reach, just as Halo 2 didn't reference anything that happened in First Strike.

Shiska: Something I must point out, now that this thread has grown...

The Cortana letters are not canon. They're a relic of a time when the first Halo wasn't even a first person shooter, yet. I suggest you do not read too deeply into them to find secrets about the games- there's nothing there to find

Halo Story Page: Would the books make the cut?

Joseph Staten: The books are, for better or worse, part of the canon. In the future we may choose to revise or flat-out ignore some of the less appealing ideas (Johnson's biological immunity to the Flood, for example), but folks should treat them as defining elements of the Halo universe.

EDIT: Sorry Shishka, I just wanted to get this point across. I didn't mean to be a n00b or something. Sorry

Word Reference

In general, a reference is something that refers to or designates something else, or acts as a connection or a link between two things. The objects it links may be concrete, such as books or locations, or abstract, such as data, thoughts, or memories

As I get it, they can't refer to things that happened in the books, like how they destroyed the "uneven elephant" or the crystal found on Reach. I don't see the spartans being "references" to something that happened in the books, only "new items"

No one is going to listen, its called stubborness. What they fail to realise is that having more Spartans equal to the Cheif's power would dilute his image, and that is unacceptable. These people, ironically enough, are usually the ones that hate the Arbiter because he stole spotlight from MC. Think my post here through, it will either confuse you or it will make you see thing differently. You hate the Arbiter because he stole spotlight, yet you want four MORE Spartans?

the back of the halo1 box states clearly 'you are the last of your kind'
the rest of the spartans died on reach.

its just the same as the crystals, or how cortana improved the plasma tech for the UNSC ships, its in the books, but not the game.

Its backstory, it builds from the game and adds part for its own storyline. that dosent mean it is 'true' for the halo game universe.

Take me out of context again and you'll be permanently removed from these forums.

Read what I said. People often complain about the games not lining up perfectly to the books. What they don't realize is that that's now how it works; the books take a back seat to the games where canon is involved. The books are filler to further illustrate the Halo universe for the fans that are interested. Inconsistencies are not the games being inconsistent with the books, but the books being inconsistent with the games, so people should not hop up and down every time they don't see something in the games that was in the books.

It doesn't matter, you guys wont tell us anything because Bungie likes to keep everyone in the dark, and that has obviously proven itself to be effective in keeping the hype train rolling. Now get back to making my game, slave! [/Bill Gates]

MC just left as REACH was getting glassed by the Covenant. What happens when a plent gets glassed everything dies. Another SPARTAN is floating in [Now Covenant controlled] Space around reach with a dwindling air supply..the other SPARTAN in the PoA cryo tubes is Linda, but she is medically dead. Wouldn't you think you were the last of your kind as well?

Halo CE, it was belived by everyone that MC is the last one, not the case in Halo 2, not said anywhere that MC is the last one.

Cortana didn't improve plasma tech for UNSC ships, only for the covenant ship they captured. Between the time of the end in First Strike and the Beginning of Halo 2 I don't think that there were enough time for the humans to research, develop, manufacture and then refit their ships with plasma tech.

As for more spartans in Halo 3, I stay neutral in that question, I don't say there will be, I don't say there won't be, but I say that there is a possability that there are more of them..

the only thing anyone can be sure of is that what bungie says is without question canon to the halo universe, anything else is debatable and theres little point in debating it, you wont know if theres spartans in halo 3 till bungie tell you.

People need to stop expecting the Games to go along with the books. The Game came before the book and the books only add more color to the games, so don't expect everything that was in the books, to be in the games.

Now, I think it would be great if there were other Spartans, if only seen, not played with in the game, but they are not necesisary (how every you spell it). I would not be upset or angry if they weren't in Halo 3. They are not part of the story, never have been. If it wasn't for the books no one would ever know they exsist. So like I said I would not be upset if the other Spartans were no put in Halo 3.

I'm going to just stop debating it all together. No one can win because everyone is right.

Shishka, I heart you- thanks so much for finally clearing this matter up. I don't know how many times this dude has posted your quote out of context and somehow pulled "No spartans in Halo 3" from it- and he's putting it everywhere. Thanks a bunch!

Once again people- this is NOT confirmation that Spartans are/aren't in Halo 3- just stop using that blasted quote, or any blasted quote for that matter. Until Bungie says it won't be in Halo 3, people are open to speculate using their opinions.

Umm...didn't we all just say that the books were not going to influence the game, and since everything there is from the books, then that would have little to no influence on the game
