Subject: Ranking System

"No, Hoobla. No."
~DeeJ

Can someone please tell me why I can not get passed level 20 in team slayer.
My friend joined my party, he was 17 I was 20.
We have been on the same team for the past 2 hours. In that time he has ranked up 11 times and I have ranked up 0. -blam!- 0.
I am clearly better than this rank because I take MVP in nearly every game but the system won't let me move.
He is now 30 and I am still 20. HE HAS GONE UP 13 LEVELS TO MY 0!

You have a history of losing. He doesn't. So the system is putting you where it thinks you should be. MVP has absolutely nothing to do with the ranking system. It is done purely by wins and losses against certain level opponents. Click here if you really want the answer to your question.

"What are we holding on to, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for."

It's because you've lost more games in Slayer than he has. I see that the guy above me has already linked the ranking explanation thread, so I won't bother telling you all the stuff it says; just go read it, it's an interesting read anyway. However, from the sound of it your friend is probably on a new account. Since he has almost no losses, he'll go up very quickly, but you, with far more game played, will have to prove that you deserve to go up. However, since your friend has won almost all of his games, the system "expects" him to win and won't be at all surprised when he does, so you won't go up as much because he's won so many games. If you really want to go up, play with someone who has a horrible record and then win games. However, winning consistently will sned you up no matter what. Also, one last point; your in-game performance does not affect your rank at all. You could get a perfection or go -35 and still have the same rank result if you win.

Correct. In short...
Basically you might have a high EXP in the Team Slayer playlist. The more EXP, the harder it becomes to rank. Also, the more losses you have works against you ranking up too.

Techically speaking, it's the number of games that makes the difference, but it doesn't really matter. Just to clarify. Everything else is right though.

Thats what I was getting at with the EXP. Because people win 2 games, lose 3, win 1, lose 2, and in effect (with the number of games, wins and losses adding up) it ALL effects how well you rank.

Except EXP doesn't matter at all.

I could make a new account, and boost 2000 exp in doubles, and then play with a booster and still get the 50 in 20 games.

So, to sum it up, because I have played more games then my friend, he gets a higher rank even though I am better than him. Cool. So am I just screwed now or what? I can not rank up despite winning a ton. However I go play Lone Wolves and I rank up almost every game.

its the fact that you lose or have lost more games in team slayer than your friend like everyone else has said in this thread

Halo3's ranking system is horrible. What kind of backwards logic rewards a player who can go negative 20 and increase rank by being on the winning team, and then have someone go +15 and lose rank as well as get no experience for his time playing.

I'm sorry America is busy helping others in the world and actually making a difference.

Something Canada will never do.

if you can't get a 50 after 4 years you suck

sorry

that's actually really simple logic. You win as a team or lose as a team, i can tell your one of those reach fanboys who wants to get rewarded for losing. Sorry, but halo 3 takes skill to rank up

I win almost every game! We played for 3 hours, and won the majority of our games. He went to level 30, I stayed at 20.

haha what? I hate reach, and the only time that logic works is in lone wolves. If stat tracking were still around I'd show you the last five or so teamslayer games I played where I went plus 15 every time and carried my team. My last two games I went plus 25 and your going to try and tell me that if I had lost I should lose rank? Love how people like to make claims when they know nothing about you. So please explain to me how people who are terrible on my team and only serve to hurt my chances of winning deserve to rank in a system you say takes skill? I'm sorry but this ranking system only help people who are bad get carried to a 50. If it was truly performance base then only skilled players would be 50's.

It's not just because you've played games-it's because you've LOST THEM. In order to prove to the system that you deserve to rank up, you need to win way more consistently. Your friend clearly is, ergo he ranks up. Chances are, you're not better than him if he's winning consistently and you aren't.

The logic actually makes perfect sense. If you're playing a team playlist, then you win and lose as a team. Even if you went positive 15, you could still be a horrible team player without a mic, which loses games all the time, ESPECIALLY in MLG. The trouble with rewarding players based on their performance is that the incentive to win is completely gone and makes the ranking system suck. If you can't handle the team playlists, just go play LW.

Dude......what? Because Slayer is too hard, you're going to LW? Good luck with that. 45-50 is BRUTAL in LW, and you'll get circle boosted all the time. Just keep winning in TS, and you'll rank up. Just be patient.

lol. Try actually searching on a 50 and tell me how many games you go +25. You only run over those kids because you are playing such low level. And if you do lose to kids below 50, you deserve to lose your rank.

The system allows for people to be carried yes, but having purely stat based ranks is a terrible idea. What matters is winning or losing. If you win, you rank up, if you lose, you dont/go down.

Look at what happened in reach when pure stat based ranks were introduced. Everyone played super selfish/killed their own team in order to out place them. The only thing that matters in a team game is winning or losing. If you were any good, you would know that.

  • 08.04.2012 12:18 PM PDT

Not my first B.Net account obviously

Agreed with Director completely. And, as he has already said, the amount of EXP you have in a playlist does not determine how fast you will rank up.. Just generally people with a lot of xp and a low level have a bad win loss and are losing to much, thus making it very hard to rank up.

First of all why are you attacking me? Are you 12 years old or do you think you can actually have a debate with someone without resorting to insults because if not I'm done and don't want to waste time talking to you. Second of all more than half the time your team has derankers, quitters, and people who just aren't playing so that hardly makes for a fair and accurate way to rank a player. And third of all if it were up to me I would just make all ranks invisible and do away with all the bs that comes about when ranks are involved in a compettive shooter.

lol then play lone wolves if you are sick of bad team mates. DO you know what team means? It's not the games fault you are not searching in 3's or 4's in order for you not to get bad team mates. Win as a team or lose as a team. DUHHH.

You say you hate reach yet the terrible ranking system in that game is catered to people like you who complain about bad team mate's ruining the chances of ranking up yet runs with only one other player. Anyone can get a 50 dude, a lot of 50's are good while others were bought accounts, or got boosted to a 50.

Instead of complaining on these forums and arguing, there are plenty of people on here that would help you out if you are deserving of one, which as of now, seems like you are NOT.

haha I do play lone wolves and the bad ranking system in Halo 3 isn't enough to deter me from playing team games as well. You guys seem to think I don't like Halo 3 which couldn't be further from the truth. Do you think I'd be on this forum typing paragraph after paragraph for a game I cared little about and didn't like? It's the very reason I'm criticizing the ranking system because I love Halo 3. If you call yourself a fan it's your right to criticize what you don't enjoy about the game, it's okay to be a fan and not 100% agree with everything about it. And you guys need to stop telling me to go play Reach because I don't like it. I think Reach is a bad Halo game but it's ranking system isn't one of its major problems.

halo 2 had a really good ranking system but was too hard for bad kids to rank up in. So they changed it for halo 3 and made it too easy yet the noobs prevailed with their complaints like yourself and then reach's ranking system was pooped out by bungie to cater to all the noobs, except for arena, that was at least thought out a little bit.
