Thread topics come in all flavors . . . some are short and sweet, such as this.
While other thread topics have obviously been thought of over time and really developed, such as here

When considering a new thread to create on the boards, do you move full speed ahead and post up whatever comes to mind? Or do you consider your creation over time . . . really develop what you want to contribute to the community and then post?

I have a terrible habit of almost asking a question when I make a thread. That pretty much limits the OP to being quite small, most of the time. There are a few moments where I'll have a decently large sized OP, but then I make the mistake of posting it in The Flood, so no one reads it.

I'd much rather post within a thread in the end, it's easier for me, because I don't feel right giving my own opinion in my own thread. Makes things too biased.

It depends on my mood, really. I wouldn't say I make long, well written, or organized topics; I just don't post any threads I think would be lame.
