Halo 2 was also lauded for its risk-reward style of gameplay. You had to bet on your own chance at victory because if you lost, you would run the risk of losing your rank. Rank meant everything in those days to gamers and competition was at the heart of gaming. Since then, we've seen ranking structures change to allow for a more casual experience. We've moved away from hardcore competition and more toward simply enjoying the experience of gaming with others by having rank systems that reward play as opposed to game results.
I have mixed feelings on this. Competition in games can create staying power, meaning that gamers will want to continue to play that game because they feel their time is invested wisely in that game. But, ultimately, this console generation has been all about opening the doors of gaming to a wider audience and that is truly amazing.
I hope in Bungie's new game they'll go back to their old ways. I miss a good ranking system. Out of all the Halo's that have Multiplayer Halo reach is my least favorite. I hardly ever play it and when I do I don't really care to win or try. Its not as fun for me unfortunately. It used to be imposible to get me off Halo 2 and 3 but reach meh. The Load outs are horrible in my opinion. It makes me die a little inside that 343i is keeping load outs in Halo 4. It's too much like COD and I don't like COD that's why I play Halo. IMO keeping things simple is the way to go. I don't know maybe I'm just getting older and grumpier but games aren't the same.
Anyways congrats on your 7th B-day!
