will Halo 3 be running at 60fps (i damn hope so), or the old 30fps? Has this been mentioned yet by Bungie?

One shot: one kill, zero seconds to live

no, i don't think they said anything about the fps. hopefully 60, i mean they have the power of the 360 at their disposal

60 most likely, but what was ever wrong with 30? Halo 2 runs so smooothhly.

look carefully and you'll notice that occssionally chief just becomes a big blob of green with the armor outline. i think you can see it best during the cutscene of him going into new mombasa

The human eye does not notice a difference between forty frames per second and anything higher than forty frames per second. The only factor is that anything higher than forty frames per second is that it takes longer for it to drop.

Well people just want it smoother, some people for PC games want the absolute highest online such as in Call of Duty 2 where people with high end graphic cards that can run it at high resolutions on dx9 with everything to the max and still get like 40-50 frames run it on dx7 instead and get like 300+ framerates, sometimes people can just go a little overboard with it, when anything over like 70 is just unneeded.

But higher frame rate also speeds up gameplay.

Can you elaborate on that? Gameplay does not rely on framerate, it relies on gameplay.

ok lets see say the framerate is at 50 fps and all of a sudden drops to 20 fps you will notice a significant decrease in the gameplay and when it goes from 20 fps to 50 fps it will run so much smoother

What is the highest amount of fps can the 360 handle?

no you missed the point it cant run at 70 fps max in a game is 60fps.

I would say about half of you know absolutely nothing about graphics hardware and graphic API or how they work.

FPS does not effect game play. A low FPS may make your experiance pretty crappy though.

It is true that your eyes do not detect any rate higher than around 40 frames per second.

Don't say that Bungie should be able to get a super high frame rate just because they have the power of the 360. They have 3 CPU cores, and 1 GPU. There is alot of pre-proccessing that goes on in one of those CPU cores before it gets passed off to the GPU. It is possible to put a cap on the frame rate so that it can not go to high. Bungie will most likely keep it at 30-35. They could easily put it up to 50 if they wanted to, but that would cause alot of overhead and increase chances for a FPS drop. Their graphics engine is very complex and needs all the leg room it can get. Putting a cap at 30-35 prevents your GPU from getting over burdened, gives it a little bit of extra room to work with just in case something graphicly intense comes around.

I myself am a graphics engine programmer, I know the ins and outs. The 360 is a extremely powerfull machine yes. But you can't just go around trying to abuse that power by kicking out 60 FPS wasting 30, when you could use that extra proccessing power on something else like AI, logic systems, audio, or physics calculation.

No it's not, you guys obviously don't understand how FPS works, fps is frames per second, or how fast the system (console) can run the game. Say you develop a game that really doesn't push the systems hardware, you could run the game faster than a game that does push the hardware. Therefore you can go above 60 fps. The fps isn't alwase just 30 or 60, it goes around them, but averages about 30 or 60.

Well the screen can't display more than 60fps is what he is trying to say (i think). Not at 720p HD.
The screen will always refresh 60 times a second, so if you get 30fps ingame, every other frame will be followed by an identical one. 60fps would cause every frame to be different. Anything about 40fps or higher isn't noticeable by the human eye at all, but the difference from 60fps to 300fps would actually be 0% because the screen only refreshes 60 times a second.

60 fps would be nice but I certainly don't think we were hurting at 30 fps. I suppose they'll have to strike a good balance between frame rate and quality of the graphics. It's a trade off anyway you look at it.

Honestly, Bungie is so ambitious that I wouldn't be suprised if they are pushing the limits and have to allow the frame rate to drop a bit. But then again, who knows what you can do when you REALLY know what the xbox 360 can do?

Ghost Recon 2 got in there in the sub 30 fps range. That is probably the only game I've played that is just not smooth enough. I don't know how fast it runs but it feels like 15 to 20 fps.

Another example of someones standards what are just too high. When Halo3 comes out, your most likely going to be disapointed if its not what you wanted..

I'd like to know how you came up with that, buddy. Play any PC game on 40fps, then play it on 60fps....if you don't see any difference, you need optical surgery.
