The flood is always butthurt about something.

KotOR

If you are serious.
He simply uses them to achieve his goals. Specifically, keeping Halo from firing.

"Fate had us meet as foes but this ring will make us brothers".

Because of the threat of the Covenant firing the Halo rings (which would wipe all sentient life and then eventually the Flood afterwards) the Gravemind convinces the Chief and the Arbiter that, in order to prevent Truth from firing the rings, they must unite to defeat the Covenant.

When the Covenant had been defeated and Truth had been killed, the Gravemind no longer needed the Chief and the Arbiter and he now saw them as a threat to the Flood.

The Chief and the Arbiter would've killed the Gravemind eventually, it's just that the Gravemind struck first.

(not too sure if trolling, but I'm bored and thought I'd bite)

I'm with this guy. Gravemind turned on his alliance before they turned on him. I mean come on, sooner or later Chief and Arbiter would try to kill the gigantic rhyming lettuce monster. He just struck first.

"What are we holding on to, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for."
