This thread would have appealed to me more if it was written with crayons.

I broke one of the cords for my X11s because I couldn't get past the final American course in Doritos Crash Course.

I was looking at Bungie's classic game section and found these images for a game called 'Abuse':

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

The game was released in '96 but apparently Bungie just ported the game for it to run on the Mac OS (with a few improvements)*. I just thought it was interesting since all this time here I'd never even heard of it being mentioned.

*Actually, I think they just published the port.

Yeah after reading about the plot, there may have been a slight inspiration for 'the Flood' from that game.

Yeah, that does seem like there is a relation between that and the 'flood'.

Edit: The Dev's are "Crach dot com", and Bungie is the publisher.

Yeah, at the bottom it says they were originally going to be an alien species (rather than a disease) and the protagonist was going to be a 'special ops' agent sent into the 'hive' to destroy it.

Back in'98 or so, I was attending Digipen which is located near Bungie. Well anyhow, we had a guest speaker come in and demo Abuse.( I think it was abuse) It wasn't until years later I made the connection between Abuse and Bungie. If I knew then what I know now, I would paid more attention as to whom gave the demo. If anyone here was there, let me know.

If I'm not mistaken, Abuse is open source.

Do you like Yax? I do.

It's a fun game. It's in the Mac Action Sack and there's also a port of it for iPhone in the App Store.

Yeah, like you said, it's not a Bungie game, Bungie just ported Abuse to the Mac.

Other than that, it's an interesting game. Not the best game of all time, but it's ok.

Abuse? Reminds me of the initiation process for becoming a ninja. What I haven't repressed from my memory at least.

If it came out in 96, it was around the release of Marathon: Infinity...

They were publishers of the game, so they may not have even worked on it at all. Nonetheless, I was too young to play it when it first came out though it looks like it was fun.

They definitely worked on the game from an engine perspective, but all the design and everything that you see in the game stayed the same, the engine was just completely reworked the engine to play on the Mac and then publish the game.

Knowing about Abuse won me an Elite toy from Achronos at PAX 2008.

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

Pro tip: saving and loading gives you full health.

I loved that game. So many moments of fake difficulty and absolutely annoying insta murder challenges, but it was a blast. It was probably the first side scroller that I played that decided to use the mouse to aim instead of buttons. It was a pretty interesting decision considering that quake had only been recently released and the wasd and mouse look wasn't even the standard for shooters yet.

It's also an interesting reminder that Alex originally created Bungie as a publisher for independent developers. Interesting how things turn out.
