Subject: If beta testing has begun, will an announcement soon follow?

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

I know it's a bit late but, two mail sacks ago when asked if Bungie has begun selecting beta testers they relpied:We most certainly have! Our User Research team has very specific curiosities in mind when they tap a Beta Tester on the shoulder. The mazes that they build into their Laboratorium are meticulously customized for the people they choose to run through them. If you have yet to be selected, sit tight - and make sure that the email address attached to your profile is one that you still check. Your time may yet come.
Now, this has to mean the sunlight is close to breaking the horizon, right? How can you begin a beta for a game that hasn't been formally unveiled?

I think someone is going to flick a light switch on soon.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

Sadly, this. I'm under NDA myself for a few things in life. In a way, I hate NDAs.

I didn't mean it literally! :P

I mean, most of the time you hear about a new game and look forward to the beta. This was pretty much hidden within a news topic. They sure are keeping everything quiet.

Usually it goes something like:
Start project under code-name (Destiny's codename was Tiger)
Make playable build (Alpha)
Have testers test Alpha *I think this is where Destiny is*
Tweak A LOT
Announce game
Make beta
Test beta
Release
Profit

Sadly, this. I'm under NDA myself for a few things in life. In a way, I hate NDAs.
Curious - what would the repercussions be if one were to break an NDA?

My guess is a really expensive lawsuit.

Lets find out. I shall break mine.
Valve is making a portal FPS game There will be 16 players on the map. They can teleport with portal attachments to their guns and, of course, shoot each other.
Capture the flag is way to easy.

My name is Mark Mezzetta and I was a beta tester for Bungie's game Oni and Take Two's game Myth 3: The Wolf Age.

i am bored is probably correct, just because they have beta testers on the project does not necessarily mean they are at beta stage yet. most likely they are play testing alpha builds, which was probably the crunch they hit a few months backs.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were correct.

You're forgetting one thing mate. Being called in to test dors not necessarily mean thy are playing Bungie's new game. The testing survey is designed to get people to test all sorts of things. Go out and play this game we give you. solve this puzzle we gave you. Yaddya yaddya. I do not pretend to know exactly what these other tests are, but it is clear they aren't all just playing Bungie's game.

A common misconception of a "beta" is that the game has to be released in some sort of fashion. But really, all games go through some point of a beta, whether it never sees the light of day, or public to everyone on the planet.

Studio's have many different builds for every game that they are making. There's prototyping, alpha, beta, delta, review, ZBR, etc. Beta is just a term where most of the development of the game has been done, code is pretty much done, but probably some things still to get into the game, gameplay is being tested for issues and design flaws, and bugs are getting squashed heading towards ZBR.

Most people think of the multiplayer betas they get access too, but the studios have much more awesome internal beta which get access to stuff like the campaign and other features probably not released.

ALAN IS A BEAUTIFUL MAN!

They probably already have "Alpha" testers. It'd be nice if they put a big fat announcement on the front page when they do beta testing though.

I think people still view the beta testing program as something that only deals with testing games... When in reality Bungie pretty much had us sign up to be their guinea pigs for anything they want user feedback on.

In all honesty, the beta testing program seemed more like a way for Bungie to get a good (and updated) demographic of their dedicated fan base.
