How can you begin a beta for a game that hasn't been formally unveiled?A common misconception of a "beta" is that the game has to be released in some sort of fashion. But really, all games go through some point of a beta, whether it never sees the light of day, or public to everyone on the planet.
Studio's have many different builds for every game that they are making. There's prototyping, alpha, beta, delta, review, ZBR, etc. Beta is just a term where most of the development of the game has been done, code is pretty much done, but probably some things still to get into the game, gameplay is being tested for issues and design flaws, and bugs are getting squashed heading towards ZBR.
Most people think of the multiplayer betas they get access too, but the studios have much more awesome internal beta which get access to stuff like the campaign and other features probably not released.
