Subject: Educational Career path to Bungie

The name's Ian, Game Designer at Whisper Game Studios, very off-and-on Bungie.net visitor and avid Bungie fan overall. Message me if you wish.

I'm curious how much of the community has an insanely strong drive to work at Bungie in the near future. Be it right out of college or a few years after, does anyone have a solid plan they're following that they're pretty confident will land them a spot in the company?

I live in Scotland so no. Plus I'm not that smart.

I do! I want to work there as a Server Programmer in the future. I'm building up on classes I'm taking to start learning some programming.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Education and career are not always as intertwined or strongly connected as many people think.

Yes, for some professions, there is a strict educational requirement and certification process (medicine and law for example). But education does not always have a strict 1:1 relationship with career, job or placement.

If I recall, many people from Bungie have stated that the 3 things they care about and the priority of them are;

Ability
Personality
Education

In other words, a good portfolio and demonstrable skills/history along with a personality that would mesh well within the Bungie team is far more important and valuable than any collection of degrees or certification.

Not that education isn't important. But learning occurs everywhere and in some uncommon ways that don't always show in a degree or GPA.

Ha, I used to dream about working for Bungie. Not anymore tho'.

Key

It looks a lot like this.

  • 08.11.2012 10:48 AM PDT

Not me, I want to be a teacher. If all else fails I can just be the new snack guy at Bungie.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time. I know who you are. You are destiny.

Education and career...

I had meant educational career, as in: What are people doing in school to try and bring out their talents that they see could be used in the game industry?

That was the question I guess I was trying to ask.

What a hipster.

Not necessarily towards Bungie, but that would be a dream. I'm just planning on getting a Degree in Computer Science and seeing where that takes me. If it happens it happens.

My goal right now (in which I am currently working on) is trying to get into Danger Close Studios. I just have to wait for them to hire.

There located about 21 mins away so work close to home is nice.

All counter-arguments to evolution are based on a gross misunderstanding of the theory.

Game development isn't about where you land, it's about how you got there.

You need to get your feet wet in the industry before you go applying to AAA developers haha.

Zython's got a point. Hence why I'm trying to work my way up slowly. Though meeting people while having the experience definitely helps. If you have some serious skill but nobody you know is in any higher-up AAA like studios, you won't really have as good a shot. If you know someone that could almost get you right in the door, then that's a good factor as well.

Maybe not Bungie, but I'd love to land a job as a writer for a company.

  • 08.13.2012 10:31 AM PDT

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Not 100% accurate, but definitely a good idea.

There are enough people here who have never worked in the industry before to prove that its not who you know... its how good you are. Get noticed. Apply. Get hired.

1. Become friends with current employees and learn their deepest, darkest secrets.
2. Blackmail for position at Bungie.
3. ????
4. Profit!

I do. But it's so ingenious that if I told you it you would almost certainly steal it and take my place at Bungie.

Hey I am a big Bungie fan ever since I played Halo 2. I love the series, I love Bungie. I have made a few Bungie logos in my metal shop.

I have taken a video game making course and I live 6 hours away in canada so I'm hoping to get a programming degree and apply.

You don't need tons of experience to show that you love what you do and doing what you love usually show's the best of you. Bungie value this.

I was gonna add "bribe webmaster and Achronos with tons of beer" but you've already done that.

OT: I would treat getting a job at Bungie like I would in any other capacity. Gain education in a specific field, get as much experience as I can in said field, and show up with as best a resume and portfolio as I can.

But don't base off your life WHERE you want to go, make it more of WHAT you want to do.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten
