Subject: "Subscribe" to threads?

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

I know everybody and their mother is about to tell me quite adamantly that this is not facebook, and I will be the first at admit that a "like" system may not be the best move for bungie.net. It would probably lead to a petty social networking feel rather than an actual gaming community, but a subscribe system would do no such thing.

First, let me explain what I mean by a subscribe feature. In some form or another, a thread to which you have subscribed would alert you to replies in a certain thread. To avoid over-inflated egos, there would be no counter telling the OP how many people have chosen to subscribe to the thread.

Now to explain the actual proposed feature. In your account settings, there would be three options: one would subscribe you to any thread to which you had posted, the next would subscribe you to threads you posted, and the third would subscribe you only to threads you've physically clicked subscribe to.

Also, there could be an option to have subscribed alerts sent to either your PM inbox or email address.

What do you guys think? Like the idea? Hate it? It just seems like it might be a useful feature for tracking your own threads, if nothing else. Of course, there would also be an "unsubscribe" feature for when those messages get annoying.

New ideas from various users:
Aggregation (so you don't get a bazillion notifications from the same thread)
Notifications when you are quoted (grouped together seperately)

How about a 'Subscibe to people' option?

That's what the "save thread" feature is for right? You just have to check any updates by yourself

In between Create New Topic and Forum Topics is a button called Save Thread. Click it.

Essentially. It would just be a better version of that. And a subscribe to people feature could be cool as well, although a bit stalkerish.

I've always been for this, I like the idea of notifications though. So you create a thread or post in a thread.
Whenever someone replies or quotes you, you get a notification. Of course, you can opt out. So say you only want notifications when someone quotes you, you can do this.

I'd rather this then a Subscribe thread feature.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Halo Waypoint had it and it messed up my email inbox.

Evidently I did not explain myself well (or you didn't read the OP). This is what I meant by a subscribe feature where you can set it to automaticaly subscribe to threads you've posted in, threads you've authored, or threads you just choose.

@Ken: That's what you get for going to Waypoint.

Did you consider un-ticking the box in preferences?

Nah, the 'This isn't Facebook' excuse got old a while ago- nobody uses it anymore.

Anyways, I'm not a fan just because... well, notifications are good for some things, but they just really serve no purpose in a forum as far as I can tell. Notices when somebody replies to your thread? These aren't status updates, and a lot of us here respond to a TON of threads. So either most of us would never use it, or we'd be getting spammed and spammed with notifications (even if it was set to some kind of 'friends only' deal). I just don't see the point as well as I would for something like Facebook having them.

I fail to see the difference between to two. I'm focusing on the aspect that allows you to get notifications in regards to replies. Which in turn, is allowed by subscribing to a thread.

I failed to see the difference too, which I why I was confused by your comment that you'd "rather [that] then [sic] a subscribe feature."

I see what you mean now. Classic mix up.

I'm fine with this provided its not default on already saved threads, and of course if it has a toggle. I HATE notifications.

Not really sure what the problem with this is. Maybe that's because I only save threads that are older and I don't want to lose. Just don't save currently active threads.

...or it could not be default. That way is easier on me.

To that double z fellow because I don't feel like quoting: no of course not.

I thought the sarcastic nature of my post was fairly obviously attempting to coax the reason for your dislike of notifications out of you. Apparently I'm not quite so good at implications as I thought I was. New tactic:

Why don't you like notifications?

Hey I am a big Bungie fan ever since I played Halo 2. I love the series, I love Bungie. I have made a few Bungie logos in my metal shop.

I like how you explained it clear but not like a BLAM hole.

Thank you and yes a nice idea

That becomes a non-issue when you consider aggregation.

I thought it was implied that there would be some sort of system of selecting which thread you wanted to follow.

The Title FAQ thread? Probably not anyone's first pick.

That (hypothetical) new thread about the idea of feature X that you just posted your controversial opinion in? Now that's more like it.

Bungie's Web Team aren't stupid, and wouldn't make a system where you'd be forced to subscribe to (by default) every thread you post in, at least for x amount of time or until you deactivate it (although I do like the x amount of time thing).

The point is that a customizable user experience is the kind of thing that gets rid of the silliness and uselessness of some of the social features being suggested as of late, and, (as long as the Web Team is still listening), I'm sure that's what we're in for come Bungie.next. (I forget who I'm stealing that from, so just give yourself the proper credit if you'd like it.)

Partly this and partly because I don't want a feature that would probably be more annoying than useful, commonly when a thread is active it's "20 posts a minute" active and when it's not then it's dead.

So usually either there won't be any updates because the thread has died or you'll get 200 pms because you left your computer for five minutes.

That isn't to say I'm in general abrasive to the idea, I'd be up for something inbetween what we currently have with the save thread feature and what you're suggesting, perhaps making saved threads less hidden away and adding some notification for new posts, like having a second inbox you can access through your main inbox which will have your threads and their new posts.
