Subject: Looking for clarity in a forum rule.

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

This thread is by no means a complaint thread.

I started a thread in the flood, stating why I felt a certain law should not exist or it should be modified. It was locked and I was sent a warning for hosting a "political discussion".

Odd. I know laws relate heavily to politics and since people are very passionate about their stance and alignment to a particular side, political discussions are not allowed. But I didn't think discussing the existence and or need for certain laws fell under the "no political" discussion. If so, why?

It's the simple discussion of a preference to a rule, and as such can be debated for or against. It can be seen as political in many cases, but I think this case about a preference to change, keep, or modify a law is discussion of personal beliefs, not politics.

So, has this sub-category of political discussion always existed? Or am I just being made aware of it now?

This thread should probably be locked too?

Probably because whichever mod warned you believes that you should know that making a thread like that is inviting a flame war.

EDIT: That linked thread is about how a certain group of people should be restricted to something based on their history. It doesn't bring into question one of the concepts that began a country. It is also almost guaranteed a unified response.

Something like that I believe would fall into the "grey area". Sure your actual intent of the thread wouldn't target a political discussion, but by page 2-3 that might be where that discussion is headed.

Just being proactive I suppose.

What doesn't kill you, only makes you stranger

If I had to guess, it was locked due to the recent amount of Gun Control/Freedom threads popping up around the Flood. They almost always get out of hand, and end with a lock. I guess they saw that yours wasn't really going to end much differently.

EDIT: The title also did jump into politics a bit.

You don't think that talking about the justness of a law qualifies as political discussion?

EDIT: Oh and it was probably just some mod being a tight-ass. You can probably try again tomorrow, but that same mod could also get pissy and ban you for that. (I'll bet it was Nedus. It's always Nedus, man. Always.)

"There's daggers in men's smiles." - Donalbain, Macbeth, Act II, scene iii

I received a warning for a similar thread that I made back in April.

Pending legislation is considered to be political, and therefore shouldn't be discussed. Likewise, discussion of why we should or shouldn't have a particular law deals with varying political opinions and condoning such discussion will result in a warning.

I suppose formulating a belief and it's relevance or importance in regards to a laws existence doesn't seem political to me, but more of just a personal discussion.

You do know what "political" means, right? Discussing preferences in legal matters is politics!

What do you think the discussion of politics is if you don't think it is discussion of what should or should not be the law? This is not a "subcategory" of politics. It is the very essence of politics.

Two important things to remember:
- Your character is a result of your conduct.
- Sense of humour trumps common sense everytime.

Maybe the issue lies with the thread author and not the thread content...just sayin'.

  • 08.13.2012 3:42 PM PDT

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

It is a bit funny, though, seeing as many other threads I have previously seen in The Flood contain users discussing law (not just American law).

If every thread consisting of law discussion is the "very essence of politics", why is every thread such as that not treated the same?

But even then, the only reason people vote for a particular candidate (or hopefully the only reason) is because of the laws that candidate will cause to be enacted and the interpretations of existing laws that the candidate will impose.

At the end of the day, all political discussion is about what the law should be. Even if your "personal beliefs" are implicated here, that doesn't absolve it of being political. Your thread was pure politics; I don't really see how this could be construed any other way.

I did not say that every thread containing legal discussion is the essence of politics. I said that every thread discussing what the law should be is inherently political discussion.

"Is it legal for me to copy a CD?" is not political discussion.

"Should it be legal for me to copy a CD?" is political discussion.

  • 08.13.2012 3:48 PM PDT

When it comes down to it, it probably didn't need to be locked and whether or not it should have is debatable but someone had a problem with it so they shut you down.

meh moderation

EDIT: Yeah, see, Foman's saying "well, by the book it was alright to lock it" but at the same time if the Ninjas moderated by the book all the time, the site's discussion quality would be very poor.

What if said, "Is it ok to state that I think the second amendment shouldn't exist?"

As opposed to, "This is why I think the second amendment shouldn't exist."

Okay, what if I make a thread about apples and then vegetarianism comes up. Does that mean I can do my math homework after dinner, or before the movie starts?

As a future potential moderator, I will say no. It is not against the rules.

You are discussing the physical abilities of two humans. Not their campaign issues or political differences.

The first is a yes or no question.
The second is your political opinion.
