So now instead of fighting bird-like jackals, we'll be fighting baby Godzillas.

Or piranha with arms and legs...
Or messed up Alligators...

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

As long as Legendary returns to it's ridiculous level of difficulty of Halo 2, I'll be happy.

The old style Jackals will still be in Halo 4, the Godzilla looking ones are merely another class thank god.

Sauce?

In this video it is mentioned.

Even though I can't find what you would call 'official' news like straight from 343, i'm pretty sure they are doing this because one of the employees probably mentioned it.

I've not seen anything from 343 talking about "class" as in sub-species. The most is the figure description which says "storm jackal" and "Uses the new look from halo 4"

Not "This is a brand new class/sub species of Jackal that for some reason has heavily muscled head and necks, but the rest of their body is scrawny as hell. Also their skulls are completely different from previous jackals."

Yeah. The guy just went on about how it was a new "class" without really citing where he got that idea from...

Indeed. I've not seen anything from 343 confirming such statements <_<.

Grunt Beats Everthing

Requiem is Jurassic Park. 343i lied to us!

  • 08.15.2012 2:27 AM PDT

One cone to splatter em all!!

Not seen these photos yet. Thanks for pointing it out. They look different. The dinos are actually dinos this time around. I hope 343 know was always just A joke.

Dont care about the jackal having such a LOB of a head. But that cuddly but deadly grunt turned into some ugly piranha looking critter.

well lets just hope the gameplay is good. I mean why would they do that? I can understand that jackals were hard to kill but thats part of the game in my opinion. Plus the hitbox on that grunt head is going to be pretty insane if you ask me.

I love how everybody seems to go "sweet, the Covenant are scary now!" yet, gameplay I've seen... they act exactly the same.

Jackals have that stupid muscled neck and head... but hide behind their shields. Grunts 'look scary' yet still run around scared when the elite dies.

Probably to make headshots easier.

Which also probably means that Legendary just got more difficult.
Or easier. Look at the Elites in Reach. They had major flaws because they were too powerful. But everyone praised them.

You know, I can't wait to see the abomination that'll be a Hunter. I'm just waiting.
Stretched Hunters? If this is the case, guess we better start calling them Slendies. :P Give them pitch black armor and a tie and we have the ultimate enemy.

It's the sad truth.

The Jackals seem to be nerfed from Reach. Less responsive. Not that I mind since I hated the cheating variety seen in Reach. I also hated how they always did uniform animation when they were shot in the hand and how they conveniently exposed their heads when moving. CE Jackals were the best. They were designed to fight allies and the player, which is why they roll and have so many stun animations.

10 marines vs. 1 Jackal in CE = finished within seconds
10 marines vs. 1 Jackal in Reach = over 3 minutes!!

10 Jackals vs. Chief in CE (i.e. when going back to the surface on Silent Cartographer) = a shootout that doesn't take up a lot of time

5-7 Jackals vs. Noble Six in Reach (i.e. in the boiling room on PoA) = a shootout that can take forever unless the Jackals conveniently show their heads

It's really pathetic for Jackals to be labelled as moving shields in the Reach description. I thought Jackals were supposed to be the equivalents of marines. The ones with shields certainly don't show it. If there is one thing I dislike about H4, it's the Jackals.

No. I want to feel like a Spartan II, not a mouse hiding in it's hole waiting for opportunities. I like taking the fight to the enemy (CE), not bringing the enemy to me (H2, H3, Reach).

H2 Legendary pros:

-AI still use cover
-most AI have reasonable health
-AI peak aggression
-tactical AI
-stealthy AI

H2 Legendary cons:

-very high damage from enemies forces excess use of cover
-most Elites have barely any distinction
-Heretics lack distinction
-no powerups placed on the map
-most returning weapons from CE are redundant
-Brutes
-tactical Flood
-noob combo your way to victory
-weak player

To grant enemies unprecedented advantages = uncertainty/fear or knowledge that they are inferior to the player

To make an enemy equal, that is what Halo is about.

Don't forget, die once in Halo 2 legendary solo, restart mission.

In co-op, go to last checkpoint whenever somebody dies.

Edit: It's kinda like Gears...

Gears 1 highest difficulty level = enemies have massive health, massive damage, and players have next to no health.

Gears 2 highest difficulty level = enemies do more damage yeah, but they die just as easier as before, so fighting a bunch of drones isn't a long ass firefight compared to other difficulties.

I'm going to admit that when I first saw the picture of the Halo 4 Jackal I didn't realise it was a Jackal. I thought it was a new Covenant species. I also thought it was very unoriginal because I have fought a number of aliens/dinosaur people that look like this in a lot of older (and some newer) video games.

  • 08.16.2012 12:35 AM PDT

hey I heard the new covenant faction was called covenant storm http://www.examiner.com/article/halo-4-s-storm-covenant-facti on-officially-revealed a theory I heard on halopedian is that "Unggoy in service to the storm appear to have been selectively bred, genetically modified, or otherwise represent a different species from the mainstream type. Likewise, the Kig-Yar, (at least the Jackals), are still deployed as skirmishers and light infantry; similar to the Unggoy, they possess a noticeably different morphology from those commonly encountered during the Human-Covenant War."

  • 08.16.2012 5:41 AM PDT

Well that Jackal is a Storm Jackal. It's a more aggressive type of Jackal.

  • 08.16.2012 10:47 AM PDT

I know that feel bro. Forever lost in the world of nostalgia.

While that would be all fine and dandy I honestly think it's just an artistic difference. Same deal with Chief's armour. There's no actual canon explanation.

The Storm are more or less a band of pirates. If anyone could afford to augment and engineer their troops, it was the Covenant powerhouse. Not some rag tag group of pirates that can't even afford armour for their arms (i.e. Elites).

You can't handwave drastically different body features, like the grunt toes :P.

and 343 did have a quote saying it was an explained difference <_<.

Also, about the "pirates"... I doubt pirates would have a fleet with brand new looking vehicles... or large numbers of the brand new plasma rifle from the elite armories <_<.

Orgainized crime.

Imagine if every gang, mafia, syndicate, etc in America united. They would probably be able to get their hands on old military equipment. And if run right, maybe a few new guns.

Honestly I don't know. I just highly doubt the first theory quoted here.

Maybe the jackal is just a sub-species or, uhh... well, at least I tried.

  • 08.16.2012 10:03 PM PDT

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Meh, not a fan of the changes.

The characters are less animated, which could be an interesting turn for the Halo series, but then again I look at the gameplay and it's arguably more animated. bit of a contradiction.

I would prefer Halo to be a bit more darker and gritty akin to Reach's false advertisement first trailer but maybe in Halo 5, if not 6. So that'll be some time before we get a more mature Halo game.

  • 08.16.2012 10:22 PM PDT

It almost looks like the covenants evolution has been sped up, how else would the Jackels have gone from feathery bird things to alligator people, or the grunts going from exoskeleton things to scaled skin things?

But then it wouldn't be Halo. Halo has always had the sense that humanity is something worth fighting for, it would be easy to make it more angsty which is sort of what they're doing with Cortana going crazy and Chief getting his character fleshed out, but the overarching vibe needs to be optimistic.
