Meh, not a fan of the changes.
The characters are less animated, which could be an interesting turn for the Halo series, but then again I look at the gameplay and it's arguably more animated. bit of a contradiction.
I would prefer Halo to be a bit more darker and gritty akin to Reach's false advertisement first trailer but maybe in Halo 5, if not 6. So that'll be some time before we get a more mature Halo game.
But then it wouldn't be Halo. Halo has always had the sense that humanity is something worth fighting for, it would be easy to make it more angsty which is sort of what they're doing with Cortana going crazy and Chief getting his character fleshed out, but the overarching vibe needs to be optimistic.
What is Halo?
Is Halo 4, Halo? Reach, Halo?
Where do you draw a line and decide what is Halo and what isn't.
Sure I have my interpretation of what Halo is, but that would be more subjective, if anything. Much like yours.
From a critique aspect I would say each Halo had its own different feel, it's own style. Halo 2 would have been more similar to 3. CE being the first in the trilogy [it ultimately is where all basis of comparison lies] The jump from 1 to 2 visually and in content has been the most drastic. Although The Trilogy is where the "true" core Halo lies.
-------------------------------------------
You can argue Post-Reach, Hell even Post-ODST. The series took a new direction of Halo. Arguably you could say it had alway been changing.
But Post-Bungie Halo is different, and those who expects similarity in a "purer" form of evolution from old trilogy to the new trilogy in terms of consistency carries blind optimism.
I place "Halo" in a special period between 01-08 arguably reaching 09.
------------------------------------
From my experiences, CEA was one of the worst adaptions visually of what 343i could have went with in terms of Halo. Note, I mean the art direction not the graphics. They seem to be continuing this thread onto 4. Therefore slowly replacing it with a overlap. From the changes on the cover of the novel further shows this systematic change of the visual of HALO.
I don't like it but whatever, what some people don't notice as well is the content is drastically different as well. Sure it's given that Traviss is new and so is Bear, Post-Halo 3. So their interpretation differs. But this isn't really what Halo is in terms of what themes and content it now encompasses.
-----------------------------------------------
My interpretation of what Halo actually is lied in the "Bungie Era" with Nylund heading the [Main] Novels.
What a lot of people in this forum don't realize is that we already have a new Halo where a different interpretation has already taken place.
This is "343i period" where Bear is taking charge with his forerunner saga. Halo 4-6 is a product of something that is now loosely based off the Bungie period. [IMO] and I don't nearly enjoy it as much as the old series.
If you haven't noticed, this "343i period" can just about pull off anything in the Halo Universe anytime they deem it fit. "Bungie period" would at least have some standards to adhere too [Remember hearing things like a Halo Bible? etc] Although it was Bungie themselves who ultimately dug their own grave with Reach. Halo Wars was the most drastic change in Halo Canon of the period but that wasn't even too bad of a departure.
This thread, like many, is one example of the changes which over-ride any previous aesthetics or even canon. It is what it is. Some may like it, some may hate it.
I loathe the changes to a much greater extent than I could ever do in the so called "Bungie Era". Arguably I could be labeled as a "Bungie fanboy" but I assure you, Reach took care of that.
Note:
This is from a canon/visual perspective that is. Gameplay will have to wait till the full game is out, but I'm sure Halo 4 will be fine gameplay wise, well I hope. Hopefully evolutionary changes to multiplayer will occur rather than revolutionary ones which revamp it completely in a attempt to modernise the series. But whatever.
