The Covenant received the Atmospheric Slip-space jump data from a data burst that the Covenant A.I. sent out while in orbit around Reach.
Smart A.I.'s have a 'lifetime' of around 7 years by which time they 'think themselves to death. The focus so much on processing, that they do not respond, and their general upkeep deteriorates (I can't remember how it is explained with processors etc sorry). It is like someone thinking so much, that they neglect their lungs and heart.
Cortana seems to have been specifically created for the Spartan mission, capturing a prophet and bringing it back to negotiate peace. It is tough to say how long that mission had been on the drawing board. I'm hazarding a guess at the start of 2552 (however if that seems unlikely please say). This would mean that Cortana was created during February maybe? Spring?
Halo takes place at the end of August, and Halo 2 is in the middle of October 2552. This would mean that Cortana is around 9-10 months old.
The theory that storing the vast amounts of Halo data in her system would shorten her 'life expectancy' could be possible. However I do not believe that it would bring 7 years down to 10 months.
I think it is unlikely that Halo 3 will draw on for a long enough period that Cortana will 'die'.
However. there may well be another method of death, than the natural one Smart A.I.'s undergo...
