Subject: So why is there a profanity filter on a M rated game's website?

Anyone who feel constricted by the profanity filter is the reason that there is one.

Look who's -blam!- talking?

Look who's -blam!- talking?

I've never considered myself constricted by it.

In most cases, I can come up with a term that still gets my point across. In others, I have misspelled a word in order to get my point (for example, the internet shorthand for adult images is so common use that I don't personally consider it a dodge).

But never once have I wished that the filter wasn't there.

I'm not sure either, profanity filters should be removed everywhere, honestly.

I don't understand why we aren't allowed say the name of German fascist party, but we are allowed to talk about them when there are discussions about WWII. Wouldn't the meaning of the word decide whether the word itself is taboo?

I remember reading a long post that goes into this further. I'll see if I can find it.

Could someone link me to the incidental post? Because I feel like I'm a bit hazy on the context, etc. of it. A Private Message will suffice.

Please and thank you.

Break down, every single one of you.

Question: Why do you need to use profanity?

Filtering out 'the g word' so it can't be used as an insult is like filtering out the word 'black' for the same reason.

It's not like putting the dog on a leash, it's like locking it in the basement. Clearly some control is required, but taking it to extremes is pointless and doesn't do anything.

How often do you see the word "black" used by 13 year olds to describe someone they dislike?

Also, I feel like you're implying that conversation on this site is severely restricted by the filter list. I disagree, we're free to roam as far as the leash is long, but once we stray too far we start to choke ourselves.
I think we've done fine with the profanity filter as is, and while it could use improvement, it doesn't need to be immediate. If you want to discuss subjects using words banned by the profanity filter then join a private group or a website dedicated to it. Unless Achronos decides that the community can use those words and removes them from the filter list and changes the rules.

OT: There is one thing I have always been confused about concerning these threads. What is it exactly that the OP, and those that wish to remove/limit the filter really want? What is it they are thinking will be achieved by allowing these words to be seen?

I don't think getting rid of the filter entirely is a good idea. But some words in the filter aren't profane, like "LGBT" (fully spelled out).

I get that these words can be used as insults. But so can any other label. If we're going to block words because they can be used as insults, let's block: Idiot, feminist, liberal, coolmike699, conservative, stupid, and every other word that is often used to insult someone.
lol ur such a coolmike

Then it comes down to a matter of oppressive words. There's that one word we all know about, and it was used to break down and hold a minority below the quality of the majority. The same can be said about the LGBT, even though that isn't fair.

Just like the word retarded, the words you spoke about can be used to insult a person, but usage in this way is unkind not only to the person you are insulting, but more so insulting the group that these words actually apply to.

All racial slurs are filtered, so it makes sense that any possible secksual slur is filtered too, as well as the actual words, because, they can be unfairly used as an insult.

Just as Recon said, there are plenty of dogs who would gladly walk along without tugging at the leash, but because there are those few that have to tug, we must all be put on a leash.

Filtering out 'the g word' so it can't be used as an insult is like filtering out the word 'black' for the same reason.

It's not like putting the dog on a leash, it's like locking it in the basement. Clearly some control is required, but taking it to extremes is pointless and doesn't do anything.
You're missing the point. People don't use "black" as an insult, but there are some who use the "g word" as an insult, which is not only offensive to the individual, it is also an insult to that community (the homosecksuals).

We are on the leash that is the filter because there are those that would use this term in an insulting way. In just the same way they would use the N word offensively, and many other of these sorts of words.

I see 'black' used to insult or demean people all the time.

"So these black kids were being rude..." is a perfect example. I see stuff like that a great deal. But 'black' isn't filtered.

That's not a very good example. Seeing as how it's being used as a descriptive word to give more information about the rude people. Had it been the n word or something provocative, then it would be insulting or demeaning.

I could just as easily say that the word white is insulting, but it's not. This is bungie.net, not politicallyaccurate.com.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I personally would rather Bungie did away with the profanity filter. I understand why its there, why its useful, and why its probably never going away. I'd just rather we not have those restrictions on principle, and would honestly rather no longer have to enforce it.

I would still of course punish people for name-calling, harassment, politics, etc whenever they come up, as I do now. I don't like having to enforce the profanity filter, for my own personal reasons, and because I don't think it really does a lot. It might prevent some name-calling or excessive use of profanity, but I think the cure is worse than the disease. People do still all of the above all the time, profanity filter or not. The profanity filter just gives the users yet another way to violate our rules. Which, again, they do quite frequently. I'd rather just let them say what they want to say, and however they want to say it, and punish ancillary violations whenever they come up. I think that calling another user a name is a serious problem. I think discussing politics and religion and all that turns into serious problems. I don't think someone saying the g word or the l word, or even the f word is that big a deal.

The same rules that we use to try to keep it civil here would all be in effect. We could still ban people for what we deem as excessive use of profanity.

I will continue to enforce the profanity filter rule, as I have always done, and the other rules because Bungie asked me to. Its their website, their rules, and I will moderate their way. Just throwing my two cents into the fray.

No, there's no reason to include the person's race in my example except to imply that that characteristic has to do with the behavior. If it was "these white kids were being rude", then I would say the same thing.

The joke is now dead.

Anyway the real reason is that without it the phrase:
Posted by: Some random bloke
Because -blam!- you, that's why.
Will become far too popular.

To be honest it's much harder to be a -blam!- when you know any profanity will be blotted out.

Because the implied meaning connected to those words.

It's like the distinction between me saying "Your mother is a classy lady" in a serious and a upstanding tone and me saying the same phrase while making wolf sounds and elbowing the rib of the gentlemen to my left.

In other words "You're a piece of -blam!-" is a much nastier phrase than "You're a poopie head", even if the meaning is give or take the same.
