Subject: The Death of Master Chief *UPDATE!*

So I was reading several articles on the internet that said Steve Downes, the legendary voice behind the Chief, would like to see Chief die at the end of Halo 6. He wanted "a hero's death." So just out of pure fun, how do you, the wonderful Bungie community, think the Master Chief should die? Any idea, badass or funny, would be accepted. Thank you!

And I would like to place my opinion. After reading several of the posts, I've come to a conclusion.

Chief is with himself. The rest of his allies and Cortana are watching from orbit in a ship. Cortana stays behind because she is too unstable and could hinder Chief. So Chief goes and destroys the threat, blowing up the place as he does it. The people inside the ship believes he's dead. Humanity builds a monument to Chief. At the end of the game Cortana narrates how most people believe he's dead, but there has been rumors that marines have spotted a shadowy, armored figure lurking around and how entire Innie groups have disappeared w/o record of any UNSC intervention.

Then there's a scene where Chief is in a small stealth ship along with a few other surviving Spartans. One Spartan tells him that he/she has intercepted a distress call coming from some planet and Chief says "Alright. Punch it." And they go into slipspace.

This would be a satisfying ending to me, knowing that Chief is a living legend, but is silently watching over humanity.

Subject: The Death of Master Chief

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I've been saying what Downes is saying for ages. John, and by extention the Spartans themselves, has no place in the world he's fighting to protect. A quiet death of old age is not a satisfying fate for such a hero, his journey should end either with a heroic death or something symbolic like the end of Halo 3 where he goes into cryo.

I agree. And I don't want him to simply sacrifice himself in a way Jorge did. I want him to go guns blazing, slauthering dozens of Covenant before dying.

I don't want him to go out in a lame way, such as Bane in TDKR. I want him going out in a way that is dignified and has meaning. Sorta like Mass Effect 3's ending but handled much, much better. I definitely wouldn't mind the end of chief after 6 main Halo games.

I presume you mean in a manner like the Destroy ending? Emotional, yes, but for some reason Shepard lost the ability to shoot from about 10 meters...

I felt that ME3's Destroy ending was able to evoke emotion, so yes like that. I need to feel for Chief and feel something within myself in order to be fulfilled in his death.

Agreed. By the time Halo 6 has come around, we'll have been with John for almost 2 decades (surreal, I know!). There definitely has to be some kind of emotional closure to such an iconic character.

When the Chief is about to die at the end of Halo 6, watch them use the Composer on him and turn him into an AI and then he can live happily ever after with Cortana if she doesn't go bat-blam!- crazy.

Then he will finally be able to insert his hard-drive into her usb port, just like they always wanted. Hopefully they use protection, wouldn't want to get a virus!

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Chief cannot die guns blazing, because no matter what it would be unsatisfying and most likely make his death meaningless.

He needs to have his end at peace, most likely as some planet/huge structure/Halo etc is blowing up around him, since that's what he's good at doing. Cortana and Chief standing together at the end of all things, every conflict resolved, every villain faced, nothing left for Chief to do, the finale of his long mission.

Chief and Cortana should go into a Cryptum on his home planet and stand as a living monument to the best humanity has to offer.

Hey, uh, if you like vs threads, then check out this little group right here, if you have the time. It's pretty fun, just hop right in.

He should die in cryo, between Halo 3 and Halo 4, so that the new trilogy can have a protagonist that's actually interesting. Especially after he saved the galaxy, he should get some rest.

Sadly, that won't happen.

I've read your posts before in the Flood so I'm pretty certain your opinion isn't going to be swayed, but beyond the games John actually is an interesting character in the novels. 343i have said that they're aiming to bring that kind of development into Halo 4 and beyond.

He saved the galaxy, yes, but ultimately he just delayed the greater threat.

I'd like the end to be Chief fighting the ancient enemy whilst surrounded much like grunt in me3 was to the rachni. We see him go down but he gets back up and fights more to finally reach the halo array activation console and just as he hits fire to save the galaxy, he says something heroic.

I have read the books, and he still doesn't interest me.

Why are you here?

I see him doing the kind of predictable sacrificial hero's death death, but I would still accept it.

This is exactly how it should end. I want his ending to bring tears to my eyes. I want to feel like I'm actually losing someone I care about.

  • 08.16.2012 6:21 PM PDT

My answer is, I don't think we should see him die at all. Killing off characters has become way too overused in Halo. Especially for the Spartans, so no, I don't support him dying at all. I personally feel like it would cheapen his character giving him such a cliche (certainly for Halo) fate in order to write him out of the story. If that is what 343i wants to do that (find a way to write Chief out of Halo and bring his story to a real close), then I think they should come up with something much more clever and unique than just killing Chief off.

Personally I think the only thing he should be dying of is old age :P

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

The problem is Chief has no life to go back to.

That's true. Who's to say the Reclaimer Trilogy is the last of Halo? I mean, I may have missed them saying it somewhere, and they might be stretching it a little, but what if these aren't the last Halo games?

  • 08.18.2012 12:41 PM PDT

.

"Happiness is like glass, you might not always notice it but if you change your view and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light."

I would love to see him and Blue team in one last battle together and perishing stopping the last threat for humanity or something like that. It would be a very fitting end to the Spartan II story.

I don't think they'd keep continuing the story, they'll most likely release games like ODST that show side events.

This sig will Self-Destruct in 3.... 2.... 1.... Thank you for your time. Cookie?

While I do hate the fact that people do bring up valid points that Spartans do not have any place in the galaxy beyond their role in the UNSC (especially since the Insurrectionist threat has probably long-since faded due to the Human-Covenant War), I do also agree with some people saying that it would suck if 343i pulled the cliched 'hero dies at end of franchise' ending with John.

We can't have anything corny, but hilariously unexpected? We can't end the series with Master Chief sipping drinks with an ODST on a beachhead, looking over the sunset, or something like that? I think condemning John as a tool of war, and implying entirely that he simply has no place in society outside of the UNSC, is entirely disrespectful to him as a character... because doesn't everyone enjoy a peaceful reprive? Hell, Thel 'Vadum fricken got his happy ending, at least in Halo 3. Why can't John?

He's had his whole life dedicated to saving this world and bringing this galactic peace. Doesn't he deserve a piece of it?
