The problem is Chief has no life to go back to.

So? There's always a start for everything. Just because the Spartans are soldiers does not mean that they can't live a life outside the military or have no reason for survival if there's no war to fight. For the Halo series itself killing Chief off would be too much of a cliche with the amount of other characters who die off, especially those who go the whole "taking you with me" type death that a lot of people seem to be wanting for Chief.

It would be interesting for chief to take the same death route that Cappy Keez did.

ODST

If master chief would die, I'd probably want him going out on a one way trip mission to save the universe from the Covenant and the Forerunners

That's what we think now. We've still got a whole trilogy and probably filler-books to give the Chief a purpose after his fight is finished.

We should know better, because we are better.

Killing the hero is almost as common as giving them a happily-ever-after ending these days (and John is already a zombie). I think that John should end up in a tube like in Halo 3. John started both trilogies in cryo, it would be fitting to end it the same way. If 343 is dead set on keeping him alive the Innies are still alive and kicking as of Glasslands, so unless Kilo-Five kills them all, Chief can go back to killing them. It would fit the story as well. Chief ends the series fighting them, just like he was originally intended.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Going from fighting a universe threatening evil to fighting rebels...super.

What about a tragic ending? Where, as many of you mentioned, Chief has nothing to go back to. He is an instrument of war, and doesn't fit with day-to-day life.

He lives, and makes it back to everybody. But, he is tormented by his utter alienation from society. He spends his life protecting a beautiful universe, but is ultimately tortured by it.

He has to die at Halo 6. That's all he has to because he is Spartan. It would be impossible for him to revert back to civilian life.

If the Chief isn't dead by the time Halo 6 finishes then I think the Chief will just disappear. Just vanish off the grid, never to be seen or heard of again.

Cortana deteriorates and becomes rampant and has to be destroyed - by John himself. After doing so he begins to realize that everything that he came from, the other Spartans, Cortana - and Even Halsey should be killed - is gone, and that he doesn't have anything to fight/live for. He finds out his biological family is all dead and that even if they weren't there would be no way to go back to them so he becomes self destructive and reckless until he gets taken out of action and turned into an intructor for Spartans in a new version of the project where one night he gets drunk and sleeps with one of his cadets, and then goes down to the armory, dumps a crate of frags onto the floor, and lays down in them, finally takes his helmet off, and fires a rocket launcher into the ceiling only to wake three days later hung over with the knew found knowledge that he is immortal. He then steals a Pelican and goes awol to wander the universe forever waiting only for the flood to rise again, morning the loss of his imaginary A.I. girlfriend.

From this there are various revelations about John:

1. He is an immortal.

2. Through some accident of warfare he has been bonded to his suit.

3. He keeps his helmet on during sex.

4. Is Jesus.

5. Jesus has sex.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

John needs to die. It's as simple as that. He needs a heroic death. He has no place in a normal world. He has trained and fought almost his entire life. He has no normal life to go back to. His sole purpose is to fight for humanity. They can't have a lame ending where he stays alive and is assumed to just die of old age. His death needs to be significant. He is the face of Halo. He needs a heroic death at the end of Halo 6.

So I was reading several articles on the internet that said Steve Downes, the legendary voice behind the Chief, would like to see Chief die at the end of Halo 6. He wanted "a hero's death." So just out of pure fun, how do you, the wonderful Bungie community, think the Master Chief should die? Any idea, badass or funny, would be accepted. Thank you!

Your naivety is troublesome.

I said this on Waypoint and I'll say it again.

Yes as long as we don't get a level like Lone Wolf.

3rd person cinematics would be the best way to depict his death.

Well if you think about it that way and in those terms, then any ending where the protagonist goes on living after saving the world/universe is lame >_> As I've said before, I don't care if 343i wants to write Chief out of the story and bring his role in Halo to a close, but they need to do it in some new or unique way if they're going to do it at all. Death in the Halo universe is a cheap out. And if that's how 343i chose to get rid of Chief, I doubt I'd feel any other emotion but being kinda pissed off at choosing a lame way to get rid of him. I mean, the amount of times any extremely important to moderately important character has been killed off in Halo...

Really though, I'd just prefer it if they didn't do anything to him at all. Or heck, give him an abiguous ending like at the end of Halo 3, show something big and bad happen that "no one could possibly survive" where no one knows what really happened, but leave it ambiguous enough that people can decide for themselves whether the Chief is still alive or not, so yeah, basically Halo 3's ending without showing the Legendary Ending part :P

I just hope they don't make it lame like Sgt. Johnson's death.

You reach the last cut-scene, Cortana and other important guy (like Johnson Type dude) are saying final farewells, they get on board a ship, John fights his way into a control room, activates the self destruct, and takes off his helmet. Face, flash of light, the end.

Killing the Chief in a dramatic act of sacrifice might sound like a great idea but it will almost certainly come off as corny, cliched and predictable. It is expected that he die fighting and saving humanity single-handedly, I would much prefer and admire 343i if they didn't go down the road well-travelled and actually allow the Chief to survive the pinnacle of the new trilogy.

Think of it this way. The Chief was abducted as a child, indoctrinated into the ways of war, mutilated, sent into war, ordered to kill, ordered to endure pain and suffer and forsake his own freedom and happiness AND THEN he dies...... Yeah right. What sort of message is that for a hero?

Be abducted, be trained into a killer, fight, fight some more, fight even more, die. It's not only predictable for him to die but it also seems ultimately a vicious, cold and unjust end to such an important and virtuous character.

Then again from a purely business perspective it's unlikely that Microsoft would kill their main video game character that has such a fanbase and loyal following.
