So I recently ordered all the Halo books that came out. (So I can enjoy Halo 4 with a better knowledge.) Anyway, I was wondering what order I should read them in.

Depends. You can go by the year they came out or you can go by where in the timeline they take place.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

I would honestly like to see newcomers read things in timeline order rather than publishing order so we can get some new perspectives in since we all have some sort of bias at this 10 year mark.

I know what you mean...in order of when they came out, you just jump all over the timeline and then you go from one book to the next alot of stuff doesn't add up.

Hey there Grey.

Read for chronological order:
Cryptum
Primordium
Silentenium (not released)
Contact harvest
cole protocol
fall of reach
the flood
first strike
ghosts of onxy
Glasslands
Thursday war (not released)

This may be incorrect, its been a while since i read them in order.

Edit- is in order, thanks to Chester Duncan for double checking.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

If you are mainly trying to better understand Halo 4 first, read them in this order.

Cryptum
Primordium
First Strike
Ghosts of Onyx
Glasslands
The Thursdaywar

Or you could read all the books in canon chronological order, which would be:

Cryptum
Primordium
Silentium (Won't come out until next year)
Contact Harvest
Cole Protocole
The Fall of Reach
The Flood
First Strike
Ghosts of Onyx
Glasslands
The Thursday War (When it comes out)
Final Kilo Five Novel (Comes out next year)

I'd say for your own enjoyment read them as follows.

Contact Harvest
Fall of Reach
The Flood
First Strike
Ghosts of Onyx
Glasslands/Evolutions (whatever you want)
Thursday War

Then the Forerunner ones in order and I think The Cole Protocol is the only one left, it's pretty standalone so whenever you get a chance.

It's an amazing book no doubt, but you may not enjoy it as much as most of us did as we had read to death the other books and when this came out... the wealth of information on the Forerunners. It was a new universe inside our beloved haloverse and I know all of us were having nerdgasms reading it all and taking it all in.

For sure Grey. It's always bothered me how the books have always jumped around and changed authors. I've been thinking about re-reading them all in the right order to give myself a better understanding of the Halo universe but I haven't had the time yet.

DDOS'd Amazon's servers F5ing for Swag Bags...yeah I was there. :)

7-7-11 was another awesome Bungie Day! Thanks Bungie for making halo so amazing over the last 10 years. Can't wait to see what your Destiny will be next. ;)

I've got First Strike and the Flood left to go through... I have already gone through the others. Unfortunately I just read the ones that interested me the most first. But I plan on going back through them all before H4 releases by reading them in chronological order along with the games.

If you are not a fast reader I would recommend trying to get through the following first:

1. Cryptum
2. Primordium
3. Ghosts of Onyx
4. Glasslands
5. Thursday War (Oct 2)

After that then I would recommend:

6. Contact Harvest
7. The Cole Protocol
8. Fall of Reach
9. The Flood
10. First Strike
11. Evolutions
12. Silentium (Jan 8)
13. Kilo-Five #3 (TBA)

Otherwise just go through them chronologically like others have suggested. It will let you understand characters like Keyes, John, etc better to see where they came from and where they ended up at by reading in order. Evolutions has a bunch of stories taking place in many different places and timelines. Crytum and Glasslands are probably my two favorites tho.
