It's for your sneakernet avatar.
I still don't believe that. I have looked on 3 different TV's (2 HD, one SD), and on not a single one is it possible to distinguish 0 from D, or 8 from B.
That leaves me with 32,768 possible combinations it could be (based on the amount of 0/D's and 8/B's I have), so with all of that + it being released on April 1st, I can either assume that they are really really stupid when it comes to fonts (which I have never thought of them up to this point), or the whole thing is a big April Fools joke.
So it's an april fools joke because you're blind? lol...
It's easy to tell the difference between D, B, 0 and 8
You're either a liar, or it only works on certain TV's.
There is NO difference, and multiple people have looked with me as well. Unless they were all the same letter (ie. all D's and no 0's, all B's and no 8's), none of which worked as combinations, they are indifferentiable, and more than one person on more than one TV agreed with me.
It is an April Fools joke because the only people 'claiming' it works are random users on an internet forum, and I can confirm with first hand evidence that you can not tell certain letters/numbers apart (ie. I have yet to see your proof, yet mine is right in front of me and has been backed up by multiple witnesses)
At best, it really does work, and Bungie was stupid as hell to pick such a crappy font, and then to take that font, make it tiny on the screen, fade it out to the background, and have it tilted(the reach menu is on an angle), so that you have to have a very specific TV setup to be able to tell the similar characters apart (on the assumption you people are telling the truth, which I still have doubts about). There are many fonts that are made for people working with code that make it impossible to mistake characters for other ones (a simple slash through the 0, etc.).
