Subject: Halo 4 helmets, how do they work?

They look completely non functional, what are you going to do with a dot of visor below your nose or a line of visor in the middle of your face?

I don't understand what the middle cross is for, its not like spartans have a 3rd eye in the middle of their heads. I think the UNSC has been watching to much giant robot anime.

Nah, 343 watches giant robot anime. The UNSC doesn't exist.

This is why I prefer Bungie.

They think it looks cool? Honestly I cannot even imagine why they think the way they do. Just try to accept their way of doing things and have a willing suspension of disbelief; unless they make Halo 4 as bad as the ending to ME3. If they do that I will join you with the pitchforks and mobs.

Edit: A few errors.

I thought they made it clear they were trying to make the armor look more functional and realistic, but these helmets are definitely a step backwards in terms of realism.

I kinda have to agree...

Of the helms shown as the Specialization rewards, only Rogue and Operator seem feasible as a "You look out of the visor mostly"

The rest... external cameras or sensors sure(Aka, like gungnir), but if that's the case why do you need the funky visors?

Who knows... maybe the bulk of the S3's had massively deformed skulls and they eyes are actually arranged like that o_O.

Oh really?

  • 08.16.2012 10:22 PM PDT

Why are you here?

With cameras, instead of having a big visor. Protects more against glass shattering in your face.

  • 08.16.2012 11:48 PM PDT

So why have goofy, non-functional visors in the 1st place? Are the cameras behind the glass?

  • 08.16.2012 11:55 PM PDT

We’re flawed because we want so much more. We’re ruined because we get these things and wish for what we had.

I never liked MK5 or MK6 precisely because of the big clunky visor, which is funny that I'm saying that because my favorite helmet is Marathon.
Can't wait for people to start -blam!-ing about giant robot anime's and 343i's apparent love for them.

Helmet with small visors are not appealing imo.

  • 08.17.2012 4:16 AM PDT

The gungnir clearly works through cameras but these don't clearly work through cameras because they actually have visors, its just that the visors look more focused on looking pretty while not making any sense functional wise and given the unsc apparently takes itself seriously they wouldn't make cross shaped visors for mutant people with a 3rd eye.

DDOS'd Amazon's servers F5ing for Swag Bags...yeah I was there. :)

7-7-11 was another awesome Bungie Day! Thanks Bungie for making halo so amazing over the last 10 years. Can't wait to see what your Destiny will be next. ;)

When you wear these helmets you should only see what the visor allows you too. >:) Only the center of your screen, or a spot at the top and a spot at the bottom of the screen, etc. lol

That'l show 'em for wearing those things. >:)

I don't get it at all. If the helmets work with cameras and optics then leave out the fake visor altogether. Armour isn't made for it's aesthetic appeal.

Halo is turning into the whose barbie doll is more booootyful game.

Most of the visors are probably fake, instead using cameras like GUNGNIR. As for why the visors are there, most likely from an in-universe reason, intimidation. For years in the Halo universe soldiers have used large visors, so suddenly using small visors that make it seem like their eyes are in weird locations may make the enemy question the humanity of the wearer. Turning the wearer from a Man into a "Thing" or "Demon".

One cone to splatter em all!!

What concerns me more is the perks that are affiliated with each armor set. It seems like the time that you would pick A armor just for the fun of appearance is over.

I've com to terms with the +*%#faced helmets. The only thing visually off for me is how nimble they look compared to the previous spartans.

That is perfectly reasonable, really though, or like some, like that three eyed one might have different cameras to do different things, like the Splinter Cell mask/helmet thing. Mostly though, I just don't care :P It doesn't matter to me as long as they look cool, and it seems like there are going to be plenty of cool enough looking ones to choose from.

Yeah that is my only complaint with Halo 4.

The armour look non functional and these Spartans are supposed to be getting the best gear.

They would be better off with an ODST helmet.

About me: I am a vicious wolf of a man.

But really am sweet at heart. =)

You realize that the armors we've been shown are endgame content, on par with easter eggs. They're comparable to Hayabusa armor from Halo 3, and Haunted from Reach, they're supposed to look cool, not realistic.

There are tons of other armors you can unlock that will be more realistic. But we have to remember that the UNSC now has Forerunner technology, and we all know how that looks. Some of the funky designs could literally be Forerunner tech slapped together to UNSC armor designs.

Hey, uh, if you like vs threads, then check out this little group right here, if you have the time. It's pretty fun, just hop right in.

Maybe it's some kind of hologram inside the helmet, showing them what's outside the suit.

No, not on par with easter eggs. Remember, MP is canon now, so those armors as are well...

Possible, but then why the fake visor? Unless the visor itself is the sensor/information gathering thing that displays onto the hud...

That seems like the best explanation. Still seems like if they were going to use imaging tech they'd have it smaller so it's harder to hit and damage. In any case, I'm not a fan of any of the new armour I have seen so far. That's a shame because customising my Spartan in Reach was cool. I'm guessing I won't be happy with how my character will look in halo 4.
