Clearly I have underestimated you all.

Or at least I have underestimated Duncan.

Next time, there will be no mercy.

Not even a little mercy?

I'm not up for a more difficult challenge.

From what I'm getting, you took the powers of 7, and pretty much ignored the corresponding letters. Then used the left over letters, which asked a question.

Duncan's revealed the larger share of it, but I'll willingly explain it in full.

The top grid is the cipher. Starting with the 1 in the upper-left corner, you follow the increasing powers of seven through the grid, moving only up, down, left, or right. Those numbers are:

1 = 7^0
7 = 7^1
49 = 7^2
343 = 7^3
2401 = ...
16807
117649
823543
5764801
40353607
282475249
1977326743
13841287201
96889010407
678223072849
4747561509943
33232930569601 = 7^16

There's only one path through the grid that yields these numbers; however, there's a lot of overlap. This was a small diversion to make everyone doubt the legitimacy of it, but the red-herring sentence was meant to confirm that this was indeed the proper thing to do.

(The red-herring sentence starts with the Y, down to O, right to U, up to A, over to RE, down to T, left to R, and so on.)

Following the same path in the lower grid as the upper grid yielded the red-herring sentence, which was written very carefully (stupid repeating patterns!) to make it clear that that wasn't the correct solution.

Taking the leftover letters that weren't traced over (29 in all) led to the proper question, which led to the proper answer.

Here.

The red line is, well, the red herring. The blue bits are the remaining letters, which, when read left to right, top to bottom, read "WHAT IS THE NAME OF BUNGIES DOG HEAD".

Thank you for that explanation. Personally I was going crazy trying to figure out how to use that 12x12 grid as a 12 tone matrix. I have a music background, so I was tying the numbers to corresponding notes in major/minor scales. Assigning 0=C, 1=C#, 2=D etc...Trying to use that to decipher it.

Then you posted "Maybe Your Mom" as the question, which ALSO has 12 letters in it. Then I realized those words were really in a scrambled mess then all my word was for nothing :P

Congratulation Duncan! Well done, that was incredibly fast.

I would like to think I would have gotten there on my own as I had started to find the red herring sentence, but I work at a slower pace.

I really enjoy these challenges, logic puzzles and the like, although I do miss the art challenges (even though I never participated, I enjoyed seeing what came out of them).

I knew I would be late but I did the challenge before coming to this thread anyway. Problem solving mode activated.

Wait I'm not done? Well that sucks.

Holy crap!

Challenge accepted. Looks like I'm spending some time on this one.

I didn't see any rules. Do we just make it up on the run or were there any guidelines?

Edit: I just read a post a few above this one...

I know I won't answer it first because I don't have the right stuff to do that, but I'll still play wih the puzzle. Thanks for the rules missinglink.

At first I thought it was picking the letters that landed on a 7, but the letters didnt make sense. I think I got it.
