I'm fairly sure all of us agree that the clear winner when it comes to aiming in any first person shooter is a mouse but what is the best for movement?

This is strictly speaking for movement. Obviously for games like TF2, Quake, Unreal Tournament, and Counter-Strike it's best to have the keyboard to have quick access to all weapons. We're only discussing what would be best strictly for controlling the motion of your character.

This is not tied to any specific FPS game either. We're assuming the product will work exactly as it should on whatever game you're playing.

Something smells fishy...

In my opinion the keyboard is better for movement compared to the thumbstick. The keyboard allows me to move my character more precisely and allows me to dodge attackers easier.

In my experience the keyboard is more precise. I can move my character to where I want it and how I want it with greater precision.

It seems to me that I can dodge attackers with greater ease using the keyboard than with thumbsticks.

Keyboard = 8 possible directions
Modern Thumbstick = 360 degrees of movement

Saying the keyboard is more precise than a modern thumbstick makes 0 sense. You must be confused about something.

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

I think what BB's trying to say is that, unlike the thumbstick, a keypad allows you to strafe as efficiently as possible without having to worry about slight diagonals, which are a problem with sticks, especially in twitch shooters. When you hit the up key, you're moving forward at 100% with no diagonals, when you hit left you're moving a straight left with no up/down movement whatsoever, etc etc. That loss in left/right movement speed can be a deciding factor in how effective dodging is. A stick also makes it much more difficult to double-tap, and in games like UT3, you need to be able to do that consistently.

Halo has none of these mechanics, is a much slower shooter than many FPS games, and doesn't rely on any advantages a stick would bring either as far as movement goes, so I'd rate them equal.

Wouldn't slight variations in speed with each strafe only help to confuse the person firing at you? It's not like you're going to go significantly slower if you're off by 4 degrees anyway.

The double tapping does make sense. That does only affect one game series, though.

I think I was confused a bit. I think I was thinking about the keyboard combined with the mouse.

But what DusK said was basically what I meant. The keyboard is more precise. You move in each direction pretty much in a straight line which gets to a spot or location faster.

Regarding the dodging thing I said I think I was wrong. The thumbstick is probably better for dodging. You can be more unpredictable with it and it allows for more mobility.

I'm used to playing with a keyboard and mouse more than a controller. So that's probably why I was confused.

Keyboard's more durable. Also, it's more easy to replace (I am not paying $39 for another controller) and there are quiet, waterproof variants. You don't have those benefits with the controller.

From my experiences, controller's stick is prone to:

-being stuck in a position, causing your character to move a certain direction (often forward)
-being unresponsive (you try to go forward at full speed but your character moves at a slow pace)
-accidental crouching, not to mention the difficulty to maintain a crouch in some games
-can feel awkward. After some time away from a controller, I have to learn how to wield it again. With the keyboard, I can immediately readjust.

Some of my setups were ruined because of these little inconveniences. I botched a near successful stealth assassination run (5-7 Covies) in Reach because I suddenly came to a stop when I tried sprinting.

Apparently you didn't read my OP very well:

... We're assuming the product will work exactly as it should on whatever game you're playing.
We're not comparing anything other than how well it works for movement in games assuming that game is programmed to bring out the full capability of the hardware.

We're not discussing durability, price range, how it doesn't work well with a certain game under the developer's fault, personal issues caused by not using it for a while, etc.

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

I am under the impression that you prefer a thumbstick for movement.

Actually no. I haven't even voted on this. I'm just trying to make sure people know what they're supposed to be basing their vote/arguments on. I'm also making sure people aren't misinformed about one or the other.

For personal preference, I'd go with the keyboard. Just feels more comfortable for me. In terms of the non-bias facts behind both pieces of hardware, (What we're supposed to base our vote/argument on) I'm sort of at a toss up.
