Subject: Competitive players (MLG), how do you get into the competitive side?

I'm getting tired of spawning with an AR and having to deal with armour lock. I love the MLG gametypes and what not, but I'm not good enough to play there (I don't think so, at least, definitely not on the tactical side of things)
So, do you have any tips to making the move, getting better faster etc.

Practice practice and more practice.

It's difficult to practice when you spawn with an AR and get TKd anytime you pick up a useful weapon.

Didn't realize MLG spawned you with ARs.

Get some online friends and start practicing with and against them in custom games as well as in MM. It is not the playlist that is hard, it is the players that play it that are good. You can play MLG as long as you don´t do it against people who are way out of your league.

Hard to find people that want to play Reach, I have tried.
That's the problem for me, most of the players in MLG are really good.

Which would't be a problem if Reach had a real ranking system ._.

Play the MLG playlist and watch MLG theatre clips. After hundreds of lost games and neg bombs you will eventually get better.

  • 08.21.2012 12:37 PM PDT

The more time you spend in the MLG Playlist the better you'll get. Learn from your mistakes, rewatch your games in Theater and see how you could have done things differently. Switch players in Theater and watch what the better players do in certain situations. Most of all, ignore you stats. They're going to be bad at the beginning, real bad. But you'll get better if you stick with it.

Anyone who claims the AR takes skill ought to shoot himself in the head. Preferably with the AR because they'll most likely miss with any other weapon.

Play MLG, watch pros play, learn how to play maps, develop brain.

Make a new account and exclusively play mlg on it if you care about your stats. Don't care about stats but try and not let your team down. Get help learn call outs etc. Positioning, map knowledge etc.

A 1 month will be fine if you play consistantly.

You may even make some new friends. Get them to add you on your main then start playing mlg on your main when it runs out.

I'm new to competitive Halo and Halo itself (Reach being my first video game ever actually). Message me if you want to play;

Reach: MLG, Arena, Doubles, BTB and customs.
Halo 3: Ranked MM and customs.

Also I have every Halo title and all of its DLC on the Xbox 360.

Play doubles, Arena, Team Objective, and Super Slayer before going into MLG. If you can do well in those playlist try MLG out.

Also know how to time power-ups, AA's, and weapons(drop-spawn, which you really don't even time...) and know where they spawn on each map. Have a basic understanding of the reach spawn system and know the areas where players can spawn in.

I got into comeptitive gaming by just playing with friends. At a certain point, that group will become good together. Then you will start hate losing. Finally, when you dominate the regular playlists, you will move onto MLG.

Get some friends that are good, then play with them/ against them. That'll help you.

The 343 forums suck. They're full of retarded kids and mods who got butthurt in the B.net forums for being told that they're bad.

Practicing in Team Slayer by yourself will not get you there. Just try playing MLG and invite people that you played well with in your games as a random.

Learn not to die. If your opponent can't kill you, your opponent can't get any points.

Here are some tips

1. Sniper spawns at 11:15 give or take a little and is ever odd number so the next time it spawns is 9:15 etc.

2. The rockets spawn every 3 mins so it would spawn at 12:15 then 9:15 etc.

3. Pull the flag win 3 or more are dead on the other team (don't be the noob that pulls when every one is alive).

4. Go on the MLG forums to find people to either party up with you or get a team. They could proably teach you some things.

5. Call outs are great to know if you have a mike or not, heres some videos that will help you learn http://forums.majorleaguegaming.com/topic/205277-halo-reach-c allouts/

Does flaming people on forums count as an esport?

1. Find someone of similar skill and Octagon. It makes you both better and is fun.

2. Subscribe to this Youtube channel and watch all his "Noob to Pro" videos as well as "Road to MLG" stuff.

3. Watch Halo MLG online with commentary by a pro, I find that Walshy, Best Man, Ninja, and Bravo are all good commentators that share strategy and tips for MLG.

Tips on assassinating:
A really funny way to kill your enemies from behind is when they are sneaking up on you. Nearly all players don't crouch when assassinating because crouching takes you off the radar. But if the enemy is standing up you will see him/she on the radar.when he is just going to bash you look down at the floor and crouch/jump backwards then melee him and the player you just assassinated will get a taste of their own medicine

Watch gameplay from top players, pros. Take tips on what they do, how the get around the map etc. Playing MLG, but you'll drop neg bombs for those first few dozen games minimum, so you have to power through it.

Buy a cheap headset ex x12s. I found I could not get better until I got one. It's a huge advantage and helps quite a bit IMO.

I only play Halo 3 competitively, but the essentials are the same: Just start playing. Yeah, you're going to get stomped. A LOT. But eventually, if you work at it and study the games you lost, you'll start to improve. The best way to improve is to play people better than you, so just stop worrying about it so much and start playing MLG whenever you get the chance. Best of luck to you.
