Not sure how this will be taken but I'll voice my opinion anyway.

During certain hours of the night and even during the day sometimes the forums are overrun by spam. I know moderators take care of these people as quickly as possible but they aren't there all of the time. There should be a way for the members of this forum to "self moderate" to an extent.

What I'm getting at is a "Posting block" for example that will keep a member from posting for X period of time if Y number of people report 5 of their posts Z times. I feel that this would solve problems of spam that takes up hundreds of lines and would also take care of link spammers.

I know this has the possibility of abuse. There may be certain members here with hundreds of alts that they would use to have revenge on certain members. That is where the time limit comes in. They would only be kept from posting for a certain period of time, say 10 minutes. Once that 10 minutes is up they can post as usual again, however, if another one of their posts gets reported Y times they will get another 10 minute hold.
This would be even more expanded by activating this feature only when mods are absent and giving mods the ability to clear the hold on accounts.

This hold would not affect their trust rating or block their posts, only keep them from posting.

I want to hear other member's opinions on this idea as well as thoughts from mods and if they think this would help control the late night chaos.
EDIT
If this gives too much power to certain groups such as Sapphire as mentioned. It could be used to hide posts automatically rather than block the user. There is already a system in place to auto-hide posts when they receive a certain number of reports. They would still be viewable, but their posts would start hidden. Then the auto-hide could be lifted if a moderator clears them

Here is a script posted by HD PVR that can block users for now if you wish.

A less restrictive post hiding method that has been mentioned before (and in this thread by True Underdog) is to have the post hide when reported. This would at least solve part of the problem while also giving an incentive for reporting posts.

This could be 'dangerous.' As a group like Sapphire could make a thread saying, 'Report this user because I said so.'

Personally, I think that that is too much "power" for regular members. I agree that users should be able to control what they see on their screens, but giving regular members the ability to impose a "timed ban" on someone is a moderator job, not a regular member's.

When the ninjas aren't around, people should be using the report button. That's what it was designed for. You have the power to report someone, and we have the tools to effectively look at what they've posted or done to warrant the report, and give the appropriate course of action.

There is a way and its called self moderation. If people could moderate themself's and not post in the spammers thread or if he is just spamming random threads you could report and ignore them, that way the spammers would look like idiots and eventually would get banned by the mods. If people weren't so quick to feed trolls, this wouldn't be an issue.

When I see a troll thread I just report and leave the thread. I don't like contributing to garbage.

Swag punks, fuck off!

I don't think that they should let members have that kind of power, like the first poster said, a group of people might all decide to report a single user. Although I do think we need perhaps "more" moderators? Or just for some to stay up late and be more active.

The idea itself is a good one and it is suggested with good intentions, but the previous posts are correct. This would give far too much power to the community and it could be abused far too easily. Maybe a suggestion would be that this power is only available to members with a Legendary-Mythic/Mythic title?

I'll be on my own side.

I'm all for you controlling what you see. I'm not cool with you controlling what others see.

And even less in favor of any sort of privileges based on forum title. Good god no.

Yeah giving anything to older members to add value to accounts is definitely a bad thing.

This is quite true. We have the tools and ability, we just have to realize this and teach by example.

Now if only it were that simple...

Why not implement something where every time you report someone it also gives you the option to block them for X period of time ( the amount of time would be completely up to the blocker )?

I've read through the replies and though about it. While I still think it's a possible idea, I realize most people don't like it.
There is already a system in place to auto-hide posts when they receive a certain number of reports. What if the user's posts were hidden when they receive the reports to multiple posts.
They would still be viewable, but their posts would start hidden.

To Verachi. I understand that people shouldn't respond to troll threads, I'm referring to posts that are made in legitimate threads that take time to scroll past. Or links posted in other threads.

To HD PVR. Yes, I could just install the addon, but it would still be advantageous to have it as a built in feature, rather than having to add it in.

To Duardo. This is specifically for when Mods aren't present. Yes we could just report every post, but that doesn't solve the problem until a mod get's on and checks the queue.

  • 08.21.2012 10:05 PM PDT

An easy way to solve the spam problem is to not post in the thread. But 90% of people can't even do that.

I think the report button works just fine, for the most part, but I don't really do any late night posting.

A Karma system would be an interesting thing to implement, but I know things like that always get taken advantage of.

I am unsure of the inner workings of the report system, but I think that a correlation between a user's forum title and the impact of his/her reports would be reasonable. For instance:

Member = 1 report
Heroic Member = 1.25 reports
Legendary Member = 1.50 reports
Mythic Member = 1.75 reports

Or something to that effect.

  • 08.21.2012 10:20 PM PDT

Key

Some people are idiots. Reporting a post isn't abused all that much because it doesn't do all that much.

No matter how you word it, you're suggesting the community having the ability to ban people for an hour or two, which is not okay.

You're on the right track if you stick to the basic idea of controlling what YOU see. I like the idea of being able to ignore a user, or filter threads from my view or whatever. Just as long as it only applies to me.

Don't take this to mean that Bungie's web team is endorsing this idea or as confirmation of implementing it. I have no say in that.

Maybe the link to the Bungie Ignore System download could just be put somewhere on the site that would be noticed so that members who are interested in the ability to ignore people on the forums could see it and use it?

I like the "idea" of self moderation. However, I don't see it as ever working. There are too many variables: alts, private groups spamming users, etc.

When I think of self moderation, I don't think about B.net. I think about self moderation IRL. I know when to stop drinking, when not to argue, and when I've played too much Xbox. Having said that, self moderation should be left to individual members ability to know what to post, and what not to post.

In fact, I believe it's called self control.

Contradictory statement is contradictory.

Serious answer? No thanks. Giving someone else the power that isn't even a moderator control of how often or when I post is a big turn off. Leave that to the moderators and webteam. There is a line of when you give people too much power and I strongly believe this steps over that.

Damn it, burrito! You gotta warn someone if you're going to use sarcasm on the internet. The sad part is I really don't know how to take this post. Eh, screw it.

If sarcastic, mythic title not enough? I'm not against giving something to older members to make them feel pretty, just as long as it's not something that correlates to public forum privileges.

If serious, what the hell am I saying?! That post can't be serious.

I would like a personal blacklist feature. Where it automatically hides any posts/threads they make form my view. Kind of like ignore, just on a larger scale.

Yes Costco. I need a 50lb bag...I mean sack of sugar.

I would have to say that this is a terrible idea. Giving normal members the ability to impose any kind of post limit on another in any fashion is terrible.

Alts, trolls, and immature people are three very good reasons to not have this.

And adding a mandatory ban of sorts won't work for people who abuse it because either they won't care, or they will use alts to accomplish their goals.

I have to say that I am in no way in favor of this idea. Just use the report button and ignore the person until the ninjas get to it.
