Just be careful you don't self moderate too much; you'll go blind.

Ah, good old TU, never letting a chance to act like a 5 year old slip...

OT: I think its just too much power, and there is no clean way to make it work. Its a great idea in principle, but then again, so is communism.

Condoms aren't always safe, my friend was wearing one and got hit by a bus.

Yawn.

Spam is here to stay. Usually when the forums are overrun with them, its not worth being around anyways.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

You know a block user function would solve this problem. The spam and problem children are blocked for you and nobody else. Perfec self moderation.

I'd rather "act like a five year old" than be srs bsns. Either way one idea that I've always liked is having a user's post collapse instantly from your viewpoint if you report it.

That would be neat.

However there are some that thinks that's too much power. Not to be mean, but I assume those same people lose arguments and want their voice to be heard still when a flame war doesn't go their way.

Eh. I'm too lazy to self moderate. I'll just leave it in your capable hands. :)

You're on the right track if you stick to the basic idea of controlling what YOU see. I like the idea of being able to ignore a user, or filter threads from my view or whatever. Just as long as it only applies to me.

Don't take this to mean that Bungie's web team is endorsing this idea or as confirmation of implementing it. I have no say in that.

Maybe the link to the Bungie Ignore System download could just be put somewhere on the site that would be noticed so that members who are interested in the ability to ignore people on the forums could see it and use it?

This userscript never worked for me.

Not sure how this will be taken but I'll voice my opinion anyway.

During certain hours of the night and even during the day sometimes the forums are overrun by spam. I know moderators take care of these people as quickly as possible but they aren't there all of the time. There should be a way for the members of this forum to "self moderate" to an extent.

What I'm getting at is a "Posting block" for example that will keep a member from posting for X period of time if Y number of people report 5 of their posts Z times. I feel that this would solve problems of spam that takes up hundreds of lines and would also take care of link spammers.

I know this has the possibility of abuse. There may be certain members here with hundreds of alts that they would use to have revenge on certain members. That is where the time limit comes in. They would only be kept from posting for a certain period of time, say 10 minutes. Once that 10 minutes is up they can post as usual again, however, if another one of their posts gets reported Y times they will get another 10 minute hold.
This would be even more expanded by activating this feature only when mods are absent and giving mods the ability to clear the hold on accounts.

This hold would not affect their trust rating or block their posts, only keep them from posting.

I want to hear other member's opinions on this idea as well as thoughts from mods and if they think this would help control the late night chaos.
EDIT
If this gives too much power to certain groups such as Sapphire as mentioned. It could be used to hide posts automatically rather than block the user. There is already a system in place to auto-hide posts when they receive a certain number of reports. They would still be viewable, but their posts would start hidden. Then the auto-hide could be lifted if a moderator clears them

Here is a script posted by HD PVR that can block users for now if you wish.

A less restrictive post hiding method that has been mentioned before (and in this thread by True Underdog) is to have the post hide when reported. This would at least solve part of the problem while also giving an incentive for reporting posts.

So you have essentially suggested a feature that would give 1 individual the ability to temporarily blacklist another poster?

Proper Response

Where did you get the idea that it would be one individual?

Because one person could make a bunch of alts and report the one person.

So either the number of reports to kick in the temp ban would have to be stupidly high ( like more than 50 reports ) it it would be possible for one person to do it themselves

I understand that. That is one of the problem areas with this idea. Honestly though, how long would it take a single person to log onto over 15 accounts to report a single user? My guess is over 10 minutes (or at least close to it). The system would also be disabled when a mod is present.

I understand that this would probably not work but I decided to voice my concept anyway. I tried giving alternate solutions which would not block posting too.

Understand that was a complement, I'd like you know other way :)

And the idea of the collapsing is the only way I think OP's idea could pan out.
