How could all of the covenant races have survived if earth was the arc? especially if they are further along then we are (evolution wise)

I agree... I think that Earth must be the Ark... However... How do we even know what the Ark does... You have only heard 343 Guilty Spark mention it at the end of Halo 2... I just don't see how there can be a very long campaign in Halo 3 if at the end of Halo 2, the Master Chief is onboard a covenant ship headed for Earth... Then in the trailer... The wreckage is shown from that particular ship that crash landed on earth... So... Not much time has taken place since Halo 2's end, and the Halo 3 trailer... On top of that... If in the trailer... This "Ark" is activating to defend the earth... The humans are pretty much safe there on earth... Unless... The "Ark's" defense can ONLY protect against the Halos... Then the Flood may get onto the Earth before the Halos activate and infect the humans on Earth... I just don't know any other possibilities of the outcome of the Halo trilogy... Bungie either has a crappy or very interesting story planned out... I can't wait to see how the story unfolds... What is there...? Like 250 days until March 2007...? I can't sleep...

The Brad Sword, thank u for saying this i have a forum called shouldnt the flood know where earth is and that is wat im trying to tell everyone if the flood get on earth then thats it all humanity is wasted and i think the flood and the gravemind can get on earth cause they know where it is its ablut a 95% chance they know where earth is but thanks for sayin all that its exactly wat i was about to post but yeah ur right on the trailor to bungie has confirmed that the trailor is about 1 third ways in the game

premise:

I think when bungie used the word sentient, they made the very common scifi mistake of misusing it for sapience. from wikipedia:

"Sentience is a capacity for basic consciousness—the ability to feel or perceive, not necessarily including the faculty of self-awareness, the ability for sapience is not a necessity. The word sentient is often confused with the word sapient, which can connote knowledge, higher consciousness, or apperception. The root of the confusion is that the word conscious has a number of different meanings in English. The two words can be distinguished by looking at their Latin roots: sentire, "to feel"; and sapere, "to know"."

this mistake is VERY common in scifi, so being the avid scifi fans that bungie are known to be, this mistake is very likely.

argument:

if that is the case, then the halos didn't kill off lower animals like bears or dogs or whathaveyou; only beings of higher intelligence like modern humans. thus the galaxy was wiped clean of all civilization when the halos fired. it just so happens the covies evolved a bit more quickly than we did.

further; i do believe earth is the ark, although not in the same way that most of you seem to. the forerunners were wiped out by the halos, that's pretty much set in stone. no i don't believe the earth protected anyone of higher intelligence. so what did the ark preserve, as in the definition of an ark? not the forerunners, but their legacy. us. it is my firm belief that before they fired the halos, they genetically engineered a promising species of ape to evolve into something like themselves. us. physiologically, modern man appears in the geological record something like 200,000 years ago, so i don't think it would be a big leap for the forerunners to enhance our intelligence and embed within our DNA a genetic memory of our progenitors/benefactors. and as stated above, we are not killed by the halos at the time because we are not yet sentient (according to the common scifi definition of the word).

they fire the halos and leave them to us to find. that's what the title 'reclaimer' means. we were meant to reclaim the legacy of our forefathers; the halos and all the technology they left behind. it just so happens, somewhere else in the galaxy another group of sentient beings evolve a little bit more quickly than we do; the Covenant.

If the earth was the ark, than the humans and earth would just sit back and let the Covenant kill themselves and the flood while they just sit there protected from the Halo's, because Halo's don't whipe out whats in the ark.
Also, Cortana has been in the core, she knows everything about halo, and maybe the ark, and she's like... a super smart Artificial Inteligance cloned from the scientist who made the spartan program, I think she would have known earth is the ark, and she wouldn't risk blowing herself and high-charity up just to destroy a halo that wasn't even a threat, its obvious that earth is infact, not the ark.
Reasonable, but at the same time they had no clue the Ark was on Earth until very recently, Cortana might be a Smart A.I. but she doesn't know everything.

yes u have a good point kolaz. The humans actually didnt have clue about the ark untill the end of halo 2 when meranda johnson and the arbiter ask 343 GS about the other rings and then GS starts talkin about the ark and the Arbiter then asks where monitor would that be then it goes to the battle above "EARTH" leading to a very good possiblity bungie put that there to show that the ark is on ark. MAybe im wrong but hey its a good guess

I had always had a strong feeling that the Humans were decendants of the Forerunners. If you read the special feature booklet, one of the manuscripts ask why the Covenant didn't ask Humans to join. The artifact that is found in New Mombasa perfectly shows why the Covenant invaded Mombasa specifically. If the artifact is really the 'Ark', then the Covenant would want to occupy Earth to be shielded from the inevitible activation of the rings. If there isn't enough space on Earth for the Humans and Covenant species to occupy together, wouldn't that explain why the Covenant want to destroy the Human race so badly?

The guy with the DNA and creation of us is a good theroy. But one of the posters mentioned that we have been around for almost 2 million years or something like that but maybe in the GAME we started like maybe 100,000 years ago or something like that. Games are usually meant NOT to be like the real world. The Ark thing is really good theroy too. If it surronded earth we would be protected. Also the "shield" doesnt have to protect all of Earth. It could just protect just bits and pieces of earth. That is why some "species", like the forerunner, ( im talking game world not real life!) died and some still survived like guilty spark said. But that is just a theroy will we have to wait for the game...

i dont think the covenant would randomly att earth for no reason or even start a holy war if they didnt think that there was somthing in it for them. aslo in halo when you firstdrop in once you get to the elevators cortana will talk about a message from reget to truth there it almost plainly says your "pre mature arrivle have cost the covenat your survival is due to mercy and his wise concil" and this being right after the invasion of earth puting 2and 2to gether what do we get the ark is on eath under new mobsa

It would also make sense if Earth is the Ark because the Installations share the same atmosphere with Earth.

Coincidence? I think not!

yeah i was think the forerunners homeworld was earth too, but if it was and earth is the ark then that has to block out the theory that the ark will protect the whole planet because the forerunners after bulding all the halos activated them to destroy the flood unless we are decidents of the forerunners in halo.

Here are some of the main theories that I have seen.

+The Earth being a protective boundry (or ark to all sins, a savior) where the Halo's blast has no effect.
<pros>
-Explains why human beings and so many other species survived the first activation.
-Helps back up other theories such as human=fourunner, why humans are reaclaimers, ect.
<cons>
-Fails to explain how the covenant could have survived.
-Has no solid proof to claim.

+The ark being a reseeding machine (after Halo activates it reseeds the universe).
<pros>
-Great way to explain why the universe continued after the activation.
-Fits in with current religious theories (the ark taking in two of every animal in order to wash the forsaken away, but in a way where nature can be put back in place).
<cons>
-Ten-thousand years is not a realistic number for reseeding such a large area.

+The ark simply being a fail safe in flood control protocol.
<pros>
-Simple, and stated, the ark is just a safety in case a ring mis-fires or is deactivated durring activation.

<cons>
-People don't like things this simple, they like to challenge their brains, so this (fully back up) theory is trashed, its just human nature...

I'll post some more a little later.....
