Now in the trailer Cortana says "this is how the world ends". Hopefully this is not the end of the world, or possibly the rings are activated and everything dies in an desprate attempt to eliminate the flood. But that would make the halo storyline a cliche.
Look at the matrix for example: Neo was the last hope for human kind and all the people in Zion hoped that Neo would save them from total destruction, etc. etc. (if u dont know the story go watch the movie). Now up until the last movie, Neo fights everything that is thrown at him. Agents, Smith, the machines, the Maralvingian... all that crap, against all odds. The oracle said that Smith is Neo's negative, his other half of the equation trying to cancel itzelf out. Even when he spoke to the architect, he told Neo he is the 7th version of him trying to do the same mission. It was a way of "control", to balance the human mind and spirit (which is very complicated by the way).
So finally, Neo realizes that the only way everything can be the way it was is if he lets Agent smith "infect", or copy, himself to Neo (a cliche of righteous self sacrifice). Because once there is no Neo there is no Smith. Then the Matrix goes back to normal and everybody lives happily everafter.
Well, its kinda like halo. The humans are ,well, humans, the aliens are like the machines, and the flood is like Agent Smith trying to "infect" or copy themsleves. The rings were supposibly made to quarentine the flood but the covenant was fooled to believe (like neo and the humans...once the "one" reaches the source) the rings are the begening of a journey of "whatever the hell they beleive to it be". So they search the galaxy for these rings so they can activate them, not knowing what will happen, driven by their faith in these beliefs. If they do activate them, all sentient life will cease to exist. Humans then fight the covenant to prevent the activation of the rings, until we learn that its the only way to stop the flood (which at this point is already out of control) and infecting people on earth.
Now if gravemind controls the flood, then he has gained intellegence of the convenants intentions. So if he has "defied gods and demons" and is the "past and future", then gravemind could have easily "fooled" the covenant into a faith that, in the end, eliminates all life. Maybe gravemind is not affected by the rings and has lived for billions of years doing the same thing over and over again. Or he maybe the only desendant of a divine forerunner, infected by the flood, but able to control a higher piece of mind. So he feels guilty from the destruction of the forerunners and he builds these rings to quarentine the flood.......
I edited this to make it a little easier to read. No offense to you. And isnt typing "wuz" harder than typing out "was". I mean the "u" is on the other side of the keyboard where as the "W", "A" and "S" keys are right next to each other?
Anyway... This is an interesting theory though. Good job.
