Subject: The News Forum: Let us use it.

"Except we, we're the zebras. All fenced in...and ready for the slaughter!"

Today I found my way onto the News Forum. It was disappointing to see the piles of archived threads, but it got me thinking. Why don't we, the community, have the ability to post threads in the News Forum during these uneventful times?

There's an obvious answer to this. As individuals, members of the community are not to be trusted with such a privilege. If any Community Joe felt that their game night or article would be successful they would head over to the News Forum and post it. If such a privilege was given to the users, I presume the News forum would turn into some odd combination of the Gallery, Classifieds and Flood forum. This outcome would not be favorable.

Bungie tackled a similar issue back in September of 2010. The issue being: How do we begin to place community made content (Forged Maps) into our matchmaking playlists effectively? How can we be assured that the content is of a good standard without having to be completely integrated in the process of sifting and testing hundreds of maps? The answer was to create The Community Cartographers, A group of forge community leaders. Their access to these communities streamlined the process and produced diverse and high quality maps for all of us to enjoy.

What I am proposing is a Community Cartographers of sorts. Lets have members of For Carnage Apply Within, Community Projects, The Community Carnage, Community Joes and other predominant Private Chapters come together to make News. Lets use the News Forum as The Community Comm Chatter. Threads, Articles, Game Nights and anything else would be handed to members of this group for evaluation and editing. It then would be passed to those who would be able to post such threads in the News Forum.

It's still an idea in it's infancy, but what do you think?

The News Forum is pretty dead and this (The Community Forum) has become the new News Forum in the darkness.

Either way, regular members can't post topics in the News Forum.

Doesn't sound that bad.

This

I like news articles coming through the Community Forum better than in the News forum.

The Community Comm Chatter
It's got a ring to it.

We could bring some life to the News forum. This forum wouldn't be that affected seeing that Community Carnages and Community Joes are the only thing that is "news" related.

Check out my Soundcloud account to hear some of my music.
Here's my twitter, in the off-chance you want that too.

Bye.

DeeJ could post the Mail Sack and the challenge threads there. Sounds like a cool idea.

Mythical Group

There is no greater catharsis than arguing on the Flood.

No, the last thing we need is some community elite actually controlling parts of the main forums.

  • 08.27.2012 2:37 PM PDT

Maybe there could be moderators with the ability of controlling what gets to the news section.

It could be much more then just Joes and Carnages. Just look at that Pimps at Sea game that came out of the community. I'm sure, given the chance to promote your group, groups would come together on projects of their own. The CCC would "report" on cool community happenings. Wouldn't it be great to have a carnage between two groups and have a reporter on site? I could imagine a funny article coming out of that.

I believe we tried coordinating that before but we couldn't come to a consensus about how we were going to do it.

There's no point; just get rid of it. The community Fpum serves its purpose much better.

We could always add in a new forum (O_O) or allow regular members into the News Forum. (.01% chance)

I'm awesome...No seriously I am.

Sounds like a plan, I'd love to be able to see all the cool community related news in the News Forum instead of things I saw a year ago.

Why? The Septagon works just fine.

  • 08.27.2012 6:10 PM PDT

Instead, why not simply have a way to search through the most recently posted and publically available news stories for every group?

I'm trying to become an '04, but it's not working too well."

I would love to find ways to utilize the News, Gallery, and Classifieds forums... but honestly, they've been dead weight for months.

The problem is that not many members notice the forums, nor is there anything in those forums to draw members in.

I mean, look at you happened upon the news forum. Most members don't even know the forum exists due to the fact that the Weekly Updates are experiencing a prolonged, DARKNESS coma.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

I'm betting there will be an improved search feature in the New Haw- *sees kitten* Bungie.next.

This forum serves its purpose as a gathering place for the community, and discussing news. I don't see the need for another forum.

Or - even better - using this thread, you could "tag" groups into different categories then you would be able to "filter" searches based on activity within those tags.

Another idea would be to "Subscribe" to a group news feed, even though you may not be a member of that group. So if I "Subscribed" to the news feed of HFCS (for example), every time another news item popped up, I would get a notification. And if you weren't interested in a group anymore, you could simply un-subscribe from that feed.

That way, you can see everything from groups that you like, while ALSO being able to search for groups and filter content based on the group.

Search by
>Group Tag (member generated IE: Interview, discussion, gamenights, game specific etc)
>Creation Date
>Group activity
>Member Count
>Only closed groups
>Only open groups

A nice idea. But these community leaders have to be dedicated to their roles, otherwise the news forum will once again revert back to an empty shell.

Plus, Bungie has always doled out power with prudence; to become a moderator, for example, one must first prove himself/herself to be trustworthy and 1337. A more community-driven system could be fun, but without control power will lead to chaos and schtuff.

meep.

You're right. It does work, and quite fine at that. I'm just suggesting extreme alternatives, because Sven wanted to be able to use the News Forum. I have no problem with the Septagon, merely brainstorming.
