Do you think the Spartans augmentations would have any effect on their offspring? If so, what would the outcome of it be do you think?

Are the augmentations that are made genetic or purely physical?

The augmentations are only physical, not genetic, and therefore can't be passed down. If two Spartans had a child it would just have exceptional genes.

"Chemical augmentations work on a molecular level by targeting molecules within the body and then altering them to begin a growth process of targeted tissues. Although the chemicals work on a molecular level, they do not work on a genetic level, as targeted mutagenesis is impossible only with chemicals".

I would've thought it would still have some effect though, whether good or bad.

Why are you here?

The augmentations didn't augment their genetics.

  • 08.27.2012 3:46 PM PDT

Their child would just be very healthy genetically. Spartans were selected for superior genetics.

However children of Spartan 1s were shown to be superior to average humans. Just slightly though.

According to half the mis-informed people, Spartans can't have kids.

According to those who know better, it'd be a very strong, fast, and smart kid. However, nothing superhuman. Probably would outdo peers in areas, but wouldn't get the augmentations (at the very most, not in full).

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Wait.

Didn't Maria retire and have a family in Korea? Were those her children?

I was thinking along the lines of Maria when I posted this. But I don't think Spartans are allowed to quit the program.

I'd always assumed she was on a special mission from ONI, settled down and knock out a few kids just to see if anything does transfer. At least that's the best I can come up with to explain why a perfectly good Spartan wouldn't take part in an on-going war for humanity's very survival.

She was critically wounded before the Fall of Reach and supposedly "retired" from the S-II program to start a family.

Spartans wouldn't want to quite the program due to the whole indoctrination aspect of the training all they want to do is serve the UNSC. In any way possible. At least that is true for the Spartan IIs, and IIIs.

Sigh. you don't 'quit the program'. You retire from the UNSC.

Yes, it's be damn rare to see happen, but I don't see it as being impossible.

"Perfectly good spartan" We don't know the details. And the likelyhood is, Maria fought in the battle of Earth.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Correct me If I'm wrong, but I remember in the novels that the augmentations suppressed the S-II's -blam!- drives.

Suppressed doesn't mean non-existent.
Also what I put in the OP was all curiosity.

Well she was obviously fit enough to test out the Chief's armour so I doubt there was anything physically wrong with her. And I didn't say she quit the program.

I think it would be either terribly wrong, or incredibly strong. I think it would be really awesome if the child had the strength of a spartan at such a young age.

You know this guy is right. Maria jumped from low orbit and took on ODST and won while testing the Mark.VI and don't use the maybe she has PTSD. Would you give the most advanced and deadly armor to somoen who has PTSD or something along those lines?

If good looks could kill, I'd be a weapon of mass destruction.

Q: Hey, what did Hitler say to the black jew?
A: Get to the back of the oven.

I imagine the chemical augmentations would have an effect (hopefully positive).

  • 08.28.2012 2:17 PM PDT

If I remember right there was a chance for the augmentations to make them sterile, but I could be wrong. I have not read the fall of reach for a while.

No it's genetic. It should be, especially the S-II augmentations. Because it increases heavy parts of the body, which should at least be a phenotype or genotype to the newborn. At least.

....spongy, bungie, who cares? I got mine!

The Spartans have their "sex drive" removed. So, I foresee a lot of viagra being ordered by them if this were the case.

Chance, which directly means it is not a 100% for sure thing. Besides, the thing was "suppressed sex drives", not removed.

Completely and utterly false. Not once is it said the augmentations remove the sex drive. There is a chance it is suppressed, but it was never removed.

What ?!
None of the augmentations could or would be passed onto the child. Those augmentations were made purely to augment that individual, not his/her DNA, or gametes. Anything that's coded in the DNA which in turn is in the chromosomes, which then in turn are in the gametes or ovaries will be passed down. In any case the child will just be a normal human. Its impossible for those augmentations to be passed down.

Spartans never lost their sex drive. During augmentations there was only a chance it would be suppressed.

  • 08.29.2012 2:41 PM PDT

I remember reading somewhere that it is impossible for a female Spartan to give birth. The fact that their bones have been hardened to be as hard as steel and stay in place, the baby wouldn't have room. The bones wouldn't expand like normal humans due to the augmentations.
