edit: N.B. This forum works perfectly fine to find out about the website and how things are run. However, as it is called the Bungie Community forum it should be more about the members themselves

People go on about how we're a great community and such, but this great community doesn't come about from this forum but from private groups. It is in private groups that we make "friends", not here.

I think that the purpose of this forum should be changed. At the moment, it says that it's "A gathering place for the Bungie community". There is no community feel here, just repeat threads after repeat threads. Efforts to bring people together through events such as the Community Carnage and to learn more about each other like Community Joes are great and everything but it doesn't have an affect on the monotony of "We should have custom avatars" or "Titlestitlestitlestitlestitlestitlestitles".

I believe that this forum should be modelled more like a private group. There should be more freedom of topics available to discuss rather than the falsely broad range that are currently in existence.

I know there is already an off-topic forum already but let's face it, The Flood and The Septagon have two very different styles of posters.

I'm not saying we should completely change the style of this forum so that it's flooded with random garbage, but it would be nice to relax the rules so we can have things such as a dedicated Spam Thread and a couple of forum games. Hell, maybe even a "Member of the Month" to get the keen-beans all enthusiastic.

If this forum is meant to be a gathering place for the Bungie Community it should at least have a community feel. Hopefully I've gotten my point across without writing pages.

This forum is about as lax as you can get without completely going outside the bounds of rules (that is what Private Groups are for!)

As for not this forum not harboring a community feel and rather just repeat threads and title discussion, I say nay. There is plenty of community interaction and livelihood here.

I'm gonna finish it. Just like Jigga did to the pyramid.

I only read your first paragraph. Private groups are more laxed in moderation so people tend to be more like themselves as there isn't the threat of being warned/banned so I kinda agree with the last sentence of your first paragraph.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I don't think the private group model would work very well on the public boards. Not all private groups are run the same way, by the same people. Most private boards are run on the basis that there's a core group of friends running it, and everything stems out from there. I don't think that dynamic can, nor should be captured for public boards. They're just too big and inclusive for the private model. I know there are some big private boards, possibly more active than this one, but that's still typically a core group of people running an ancillary community. I don't think its analogous.

Interestingly this forum was at one time a private board, but Bungie realized they needed some place to talk about the community itself. However, as the board changed from Chapter Founders to The Septagon, the feel, style, and of course people using it changed quite a bit. Which again I think perfectly reflects my earlier point that private dynamics are not transferable over tot he public.

So, I disagree with your suggestion, and baser assertion that this forum doesn't feel like a community. I think it feels like a community. Its true that the discussion of late has been pretty monotonous, but I don't think adopting a private board model will fix it. That doesn't address the actual problem. It just throws a sheet over the problem and calls it something else. We need content and something to talk about. Turning this into a mini Flood won't help that IMO.

  • 08.28.2012 1:13 PM PDT

I can totally see where your coming from, and I agree. I don't post in the flood much at all. Excuse me but it's full of idiots imho. I only post here because there are more interesting members. Sometimes the odd good topic too. We are the community, this is the community forum.. this should be OUR forum in which we can dicuss things we want to talk about, I don't mean things that should obviously go in the flood, but threads where we can just chat as a community without having to run off and hide in chapters.

This place would just turn into The Flood 2.0 if we did that.

I wonder when people will realize that the whole website is a gathering place for the community, not just one specific forum.

As much as I'd like to see a departure from some of our most cherished repeat threads, I am hesitant to turn this place into just another Flood.

I get where you're coming from, but something like a spam thread might be a problem if the webteam wants their title system to function properly.

Forum games and all that sound very nice, even with all the jokes we have around here, I feel this forum is taken to seriously. It should be like a carnival, I want to go on the Tilt-A-Whirl.

Interesting thread OP, I agree with parts of it. The community consists of many different subgroups and divisions, and while we may all be here for a common love of Bungie I've never thought there to be a core to the community.

How long can we actually last? By now we've re discussed the same topic a trillion times. With bungie doing absolutely nothing significant everything is destined to devolve into the flood, which is honestly the busiest board due to the fact that you don't get Insta banned for talking about something we haven't covered a trillion times already.

Then we'd just have a community war of sorts between floridians and community regulars because now its not going to one place to discuss one thing and one place for another, it's picking which place and which people you want to talk about whatever you want with.

Having a broader range of threads to discuss and talking about whatever you want are vastly different.

I understand many people would not want it to turn into "another Flood". My idea is not to totally change the forum, but to add some elements that are successful in private groups.

I agree, although the rest of your rant was a little too sweeping for me to follow. Private Groups are the best venue for lasting connections. However, you need a place to become aware of one another, and this board serves that purpose.

It doesn't seem like it at all dude. Just look at the threads that are on the front page currently. The majority of them don't consist of members getting to know each other etc.

You've got your bungie staff circle jerk threads, Your random question threads, An occasional mail sack thread, but never really anything that is the community mingling with itself, The community forum seems like it's more for questions about the community and by community / bungie.

So other than the community, titles, Bungie.next, and Destiny, what would be allowed into the spectrum of discussion?

One would assume that talking about the community / trying to get to know people from the community in a forum titled "Bungie Community" would be the first logical step, but apparently not.

You're not supposed to get to know people directly via personal dialogue ("Hello." "What's your name?" "Where did you go to school?" etc.). But rather through more indirect means (posting style, mannerisms, ideals, attitude, etc.).

I just got to know you a little (and you, me) right now.

I grew aware of other users in the game forums (namely Halo 3). This is probably the case with many others too as after a few years many a user will wind up here.

I joined many private groups, but that was from leads from either private messages or The Classifieds, not here.

At the moment, the "purpose" of this forum is to find out more about the website, not to bring the community together. I wish for that to change.

True but you can do that on any forum, Why on earth would this forum be titled "Bungie Community" when the majority of it's content isn't completely centered around the community.

Well I mean I guess it kind of is, A lot of threads ask random questions about the community.

But when I think of "Bungie Community" I think of it's user base, That make sense?

Exactly! That's what I was trying to say. If you want to find out more about bnet run a google search, I don't get why a forum titled "Bungie Community" has almost nothing to do with its user base.
