I used to play this game all the time on my computer when I went to my friends house. So I went out and bought it a while back but I never needed the CD to play. Now today i get back on and download an update for the multiplayer. And now it won't start the game even to the menu without saying "please insert the Halo:CE CD ROM" I never needed it before this damn update......did an update stop people from playing the game without the ROM? PS: I should mention that I lost the ROM.....that would be why I ask this question.[Edited on 6/21/2006]
Umm, every version of Halo needs a CD in the drive to run, unless you got a no cd patch. Which there isn't one for the latest version. And is frowned upon by Bungie apparently. So, if you lost the CD, ur S-O-L.
The thing of it is, I never needed one untill now. Why is it just now not starting work?
Well...you were supposed to need one all the time. I've never heard of an official copy that DIDN'T need the CD to run.You could try Daemontools to mount a CD image, but that's assuming you have a valid key and have purchased the game at one point or another.I would also try contacting microsoft...if you have a key and some other information (usually the product box will suffice,) then they should zip you a new copy. It's worked for some.
Halo CE doesn't even NEED the CD, as long as you have the key...
I do have the key still, so how do I get it to run so I can play online?

Prior to the update the disc did not have to be in your computer. They did it to cut down on piracy, (it's not a glitch, it's a feture!).You'd have to get your hands on another CD or find your lost one. The PC version is going for around $20 from what I hear. Mac is still $40+.
did they come out with another patch finally?
I figured that is what it was for. Damn, that really sucks too.
I saw the Mac version at CompUSA for $29.99.

I installed it originally then I never put the ROM in to play. I never needed to. I just clicked on the icon and it ran. and it did today too, but after I went online to download the update it woulden't start it back up without the ROM.
u know when u install halo pc and after u put the cd key it gives u like aq 24 digit code on the next page after u put the key in. that is the number that the microsoft representitaves will ask u for when u are asking for info about ur cd. the number will be something like xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxxx

They did it to cut down on piracy, (it's not a glitch, it's a feature!).I'm pretty sure that only the Mac version didn't need the disc, way back in the day. I read something on Macsoft about that. I think the PC version always needed the disc.Posted by: Master KimI saw the Mac version at CompUSA for $29.99.Schweet! I'm there! Thanks!
