We all know 343 Industries chose Timberland when deciding between Halo PC maps to add to the Anniversary map pack for Halo: Reach but which map was your favorite?

This isn't about which map would have been best as a Reach map. This is about which one you prefer in Halo PC. If you want to, you can comment on which would work best for Halo: Reach as a side topic, though.

I voted Death Island simply because I love the scale of the map and how it tailors to all types of warfare in Halo. It's got CQB for infantry, large open spaces for Snipers, Scorpions and light vehicles to just drive around for fun (or tactically xD) and huge open airspace with suitable cover to retreat to in Banshee's.

I feel that the map could still fit a few more players in than 16 and overall, those are the reasons why i prefer it compared to the other maps. That's not to say the other maps aren't good, they're all very good, I just think Death Island stood out more xD

As for it Reach, It may not have been chosen due to the fact it's large. Players may be left with little vehicles, take too long to get to objectives etc. A number of games on Halo PC don't often get finished as people are unable to get to or successfully capture the objectives so 343 MAY have thought of this as a reason for it's exclusion. Just my 2 cents of course.

My all time favorite is Battle Creek

Just because I never said it in the OP, I chose Danger Canyon. The map works beautifully in a competitive arena and no other Gearbox map beside Ice Fields works that well in a competitive arena in my opinion.

The control of the bridge, the multiple paths you can go on, the strong team play oriented design, etc. are just amazing. I normally find myself only enjoying playing one role on most Halo maps but there are at least 3 I equally love while playing this map. I've rarely had a bad game on this map whether I'm winning or not.

As for it seeming that Death Island is the preferred map by the forum so far, I've got to say I strongly disagree.

For one, Death Island seems only playable with at least 16 people. It's so large most of the map doesn't even get that much love. There is so much camping that takes place with the teleporters, there are tons of banshees which are annoying as hell on Halo PC, and the map is heavily dependent on vehicles if you're playing capture the flag.

Overall, it's not that flexible, it's not fit for competitive play and the map is absolutely broken in so many situations. I just can't see what's so appealing about it to everyone. I mean, I guess in a situation where all you can find are 16/16 servers I could see how people would think it was a good map but it's not like most people here aren't familiar with the other maps in purpose built situations.

I just want to iterate more on the fact it has so many banshees... I hate banshees... Hate hate hate...

Halo 3

Looking for a discussion? Hahaha this is good.

Well to be honest I can't share your opinion on Death Island because of the way you look at the game. You state you play Halo CE with competitive intent, or the nature itself at least. And because of that, I can definitely see why Death Island wouldn't get your vote, or mine for that matter. But the truth is that, for me, Halo CE was always a game where I hopped into a server and looked for enemies to shoot at. Essentially, I always played Halo CE casually. Death Island provided that ecstatic feeling whenever you were promenading around the map.

I was always eager to rush into the crowds, to enter teleporters and see hell on top of the island. There were sections of the map for all kinds of play. I enjoyed driving around the perimeter of the map and finding anyone who crossed my path. And then when I had my dose, i'd find entry into the center of the map and see what was going on there. Eventually I would find my way to a banshee and scout the island, picking at enemies without mercy.

Basically Death Island is a map full of adventure. There's so much stuff you can do during a match that it never got old for me. Ultimately, Death Island was a map that utilized everything that Halo had to offer, giving us the true depth and style of Halo multiplayer.

Actually, I don't always play Halo: Combat Evolved with competitive intent. I play it with a casual time in mind. That doesn't mean things such as people rotating in a ghost above the teleporter don't irritate me. Being constantly annoyed by banshees irritates me as well. I like having fun with a game and these things ruin it for me.

Also, yes... I'm looking for discussion. If you're on a forum what else are you looking for? Here's the description for this forum "Halo 2 Vista / Halo PC related discussions." The image that appears at the top for this forum reads "Discuss Halo 2 and Halo for the PC." I know you're probably not meaning that with ill intent but it's always bugged me when people judge me for wanting to discuss things on a forum.

I guess "casual play" is subjective. Can't really help it if you don't like how other people play the game lol.

So you're saying that if I casually play a game I shouldn't have any problem with anything else in the game? That if people are cutting off a certain route I'd like to go by exploiting something in the map it wouldn't damper my experience with it?

Also, this isn't just about how other people play the game. It's how the map is designed in all. The fact there are these many things that can be exploited, the amount of vehicular combat, etc.

Just because you're casually playing something doesn't mean you can't have any sense of critique towards it. I can tell you for a fact that even while playing casually you can be annoyed by certain things in the game. It seems like you're painting casual players as a group of idiots who just don't give two flying -blam!-s what they're playing.

Completely agree.

As i said, I prefer it when it has large player counts and i do feel it should and could have more players. When the player count's low, i don't bother with it but for the most part, a high player count with a large number of vehicles and space for casual play make the map entertaining to me :)

Frankly, I have no idea why you're being aggressive. Calm the -blam!- down. I don't care that people can block a teleporter or hog all the banshees. For me, that's part of the game, casual or competitive. Finding a way around these things is super easy and fun, in my opinion. Not to mention that these "exploits" rarely occur within my experience.

And I stand by what I said: casual play is subjective. My casual play could consist of -blam!- around and messing with players while yours could be clean gameplay in a relaxed atmosphere.

Your 'beliefs' mean less than dick to me.

From best to worst:

Danger Canyon - Maybe my favorite BTB map in the entire series. Same general design as Sidewinder, but less restrictive and harder to shut down. I especially like how the infantry and vehicle areas serve as parallel worlds, and infantry and vehicle players aren't constantly funneled into each other. Both teams are challenged in every scenario in CTF. There's a good amount of coordination required to pull and cap a flag when both teams are good, but at the same time stopping a cap once the other team pulls is pretty difficult, and very satisfying when you do it. I think it plays best without tanks, just warthogs and ghosts.

Timberland - One of my favorites in the series. Not much to say. Simple, two base, rock solid map. I actually like it better than Blood Gulch. Too bad 343/CA ruined it when they ported it to Reach though.

Ice Fields - I like this because of how well suited it is for tanks. The natural geo of the map allows them to dominate, but that top bridge keeps them in check. I think it would be better with banshees though.

Death Island - It's okay I guess. The only banshee map that doesn't suck. Problem is it's so damn big. I'm a little biased though, because this is the map I just can't figure out for some reason. I get owned almost every time I play it. If anyone has some tips, I'm listening.

Gephyrophobia - Boring map. Not much to say. I just don't like bridge maps.

Infinity - Kill this piece of -blam!- with fire.

I know how you feel with Infinity. When i'm playing on that map I end up asking myself: "what in the world am I doing here?" lhahaha

Something smells fishy...

My favorite is Bloodgulch. It may not be a Gearbox map but it's my favorite map in Halo Combat Evolved PC.

As for the Gearbox maps, I have to say none. I really dislike all those maps.

How so? Both the exact clone and the remade remake seem pretty well made, and I find it better than the others. (Beaver Creek wasn't made for Anni. settings, I'll tell you that much.)

And I hate the banshee with a burning passion in CE. Unless its Death Island (because tanks can actually fight banshee's in CE. Or if there any others in this scenario...), I dislike it. Needless to say Blood Gulch isn't my favorite either.

-They reduced the size of the map by 20%. On a big map, that's pretty noticeable.

-That annoying cliffside is there for some reason, I've plunged to my death off of it a couple of times.

-Trees. Trees everywhere. Way more trees than the original.

-Orientation is whack. On the original Timberland, I always knew where I was. Because it was fairly open, and one half of the map was in the sun and the other in the shade. Those are little things, but they're important. Timberland in Reach looks the same no matter where you are.

(Beaver Creek wasn't made for Anni. settings, I'll tell you that much.)
None of them are, really. Timberland probably translates the best, ironically. Dammy, Prisoner, and Headlong are completely broken by the jetpack. HH is messed up by jetpack, and is open enough to where camo is a real pain in the ass. None of the small maps play well with slow kill times.

You bring up valid reasons on aesthetics and how Reach ruins everything it touches. I guess I just thought it played well, unlike almost all the others.

I think the bold perfectly describes the problem.

I already spoke of Timberland. It plays like an average BTB map.

Dammy is painful to play, with the overshield glitch and the unnecessary shotgun on the RR (Remake Remade). Its also way too segmented in general, its difficult to move anywhere because someone above you will take you out.

I never even really liked the original Prisoner. It was just too open and clustered. In Anni. settings, walking anywhere is rewarded with being shot thanks to the auto aim/bullet magnetism. (that was obviously absent in CE.) Even the RR is so-so.

Headlong's RR is average, and I hate its one-flag, territories land grab was kind of fun and a change of pace from normal objective. Its original has the 6174 Hog, and that makes it no fun. Why is this even in CEA I don't even...

Beaver Creek. 3-Shot Creek. The new teleporters, I dislike, and the original's porters are just awful. Anni. settings are awful in this map, it demotes the sniper to a pea shooter unless you happen to be amazing beyond belief with it.

HH is unplayable in Anni. settings, and just bearable in anything else. Way too open and shotgun spawn is campy.

I'm not being aggressive in the slightest. I don't understand where you're even getting that from. I guess you're imagining me saying all of that in an irritated voice. Not my fault if that's the case.

It seems that these things happen constantly to me on Death Island. Always finding people hogging all the vehicles and I wouldn't blame them because that's how the map is designed. It's designed for that sort of gameplay and I simply don't prefer it. It's not like I feel anyone is "wrong" for liking it, though. I just feel like expressing that I dislike it in the same way you feel like expressing you do like it. No harm in that, is there?

Speaking of Ridgeline (Timberland in Reach), I'm a bit confused why they chose that map. I was talking to a friend of mine recently and we seem to both agree either Danger Canyon or Ice Fields would have been far superior choices for Reach. I mean, I could imagine some subtle changes to the tunnels/bases wouldn't hurt but the overall design would have been magnificent in Reach.

It's not like I necessarily hate Timberland but I just don't think there's anything great about it. It just feels like a wrinkly Blood Gulch and I think most of you know my dislike of Blood Gulch. It's just absolutely boring to me.

Halo CE forever!

Danger Canyon is indeed a great map, my fave Gearbox map. Second one is Ice Fields. Third one's Infinity with it's vehicle oriented CTF matches, MANY PEOPLE and NO BANSHEES. Heh, all the maps made by Gearbox are quite large and great for CTF. Hey wait... If I recall Infinity wasn't Gearbox map. I might be wrong though, I don't remember the maps in the xbox version.

Infinity was in fact one of the Gearbox maps. :P

The reason all the maps are larger is because there was a need for larger scaled maps. Before the Gearbox maps, there were only two maps with vehicles (Sidewinder and Blood Gulch) and none of them were truly fit for 16 player combat. They figured there would be a high demand for 16 player maps so they focused on that.

They also decided to completely ruin the integrity of the original maps by sticking the new weapons in whether or not it made any sense to... Who the hell thought it would be cool to put a flamethrower behind one of the pillars next to the teleporter on Chillout? Meh, another rant for another time...

Half-Minute Hero
MBU
Portal
Halo 3 is the best Halo ever
Maps I like: Turf, Avalanche, Pylon, Sandbox, Breakpoint and many more.

Death Island. I'm an avid fan of vechiles, and it offered a wonderland of fun for my piloting skills. Plus, it had great variety of combat encounters.

In all fairness, Reach made Timberland look bad. And maps more extreme in other directions like Danger Canyon and Death Island appeal to people more than a fairly calm and medium BTB map like Timberland.

So I would throw my vote most towards Timberland/Death Island, and give Danger Canyon a nod of respect. I can't really pick a favorite, lol.
