Rules about what you can and cannot discuss are in a minute fraction of the total rules.
But that's wrong.

Of the 18 points in the Forum Rules, 1 of them (2 if you count the one about advertising) talk about non-common sense prohibitions of discussion topics.
But that's wrong.

Of the 18 bullet points listed in the rules thread that you deem rules, here are the only bullet points that do not advise what is and is not appropriate for discussion:
- We reserve the right to remove you from the forums for any reason, but probably only if you deserve it. You agreed to this when you created your account.
- Ban lengths are not necessarily identical for users who commit the same offense, context and the user involved matter. Nobody cares about your forum title.
- If you disagree with a moderating decision, send the Forum Ninja responsible a message (check this article for tips).

You cleverly trying an evade this critical error by falling back on the incorrect belief that the rules are contrived from common sense. To argue that something is known by 'common sense' is rather a fool's argument. Common sense is fully subjective, and is specific only to the context, knowledge, and perception of a single individual. To argue that people should know something because of common sense is problematic because not everyone thinks the same way. Common sense is a fool's argument in that it utilizes uncited and implicit reasoning. Reasoning should be done explicitly and objectively, or else it is not valid. To believe in common sense is to be unaware of the reality of alternate perceptions around you.

- Do not impersonate others (with your posts or user profile)Something that's illegal in real life. How this wouldn't be common sense I have no idea.
- Do not advocate cheating or griefing behavior.General dickish behavior. Also, a game development company clearly wouldn't want people advocating cheating. If you think otherwise, you're stupid.
- Leaked content (including magazine scans), real or fake, will not be tolerated. Whether this'd be to cover their own asses or because of some sense of importance and an attempt to help the world of gaming at large, this is a pretty obvious inclusion into the rules.
- Do not discuss unauthorized modification of console game hardware or software, even if you're not trying to cheat or pirate.Same with the cheating rule, this is just common sense that a game developer wouldn't want you to discuss this on their site.
- Political or religious discussion is prohibited. Thing #1 that isn't common sense.
- When creating new threads, please be sure to post in the correct forum. Do not post off-topic in any forum or thread. The quintessential common sense rule.
- Do not use the public forums to run contests, solicit donations, barter or sell items/services, or advertise anything at all (except on-topic posts in the Classifieds forum).Slightly not-so common sense. So I'll give it to you; #2.
- We reserve the right to remove you from the forums for any reason, but probably only if you deserve it. You agreed to this when you created your account. Not about posting.
- Ban lengths are not necessarily identical for users who commit the same offense, context and the user involved matter. Nobody cares about your forum title. Not about posting.
- If you disagree with a moderating decision, send the Forum Ninja responsible a message (check this article for tips). Not about posting.
- Use common sense. This is a video game developer's website. Keep your posts on-topic and "safe for work". The further you stray the more you'll tempt a ban.Literally an entire rule about using common sense.
- Respect your fellow members, or at least tolerate them publicly. Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated, even if they probably deserve it. Common courtesy (and sense)
- "Spam" is prohibited. (What counts as spam?)Oh my god unbelievably common sense.
- Do not post about any illegal substances or activities.More common sense.
- Do not post false information or mislead other forum-goers. Yes, even if it is funny.Common sense, common sense, I love me some common sense.
- Do not post spoilers or even pretend spoilers without clearly marking them. see also: cheating rule and modding rule
- Do not bypass the profanity filter. (Helpful Link)Com. Sen.
- New threads should encourage a discussion among the community; please be mindful of that when you create threads. Boat loads upon boat loads of common sense.

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

What it is like to me.

Hah, cmon. Bungie isn't running a correctional facility. Just keep banning the repeat offenders.
DEfine bungie. While the moderators may moderate, are they bungie? OH BUD try to answer that with logical sensible stuff. I dare you.

But seriously; Moderators are not employees. While they "moderate" the forums, they are not ALL literally achronos

And with that, i stop typing.

Punishment - justice for their actions
Protection for the public from violators and evil-doers
Correction - This will "educate" offenders that what they did, is a no-no.

Going by these definitions one would hopefully assume both.

A bit of both. Sort of how your teacher gave you a time-out whenever you weren't playing nice with the other kids. Perma-bans on the other hand, those are just straight-up punishment. Banhammer to the full extent, y'know?

There are 3. Allow me to elaborate.

Users must realize that actions have consequences. They are punished for violations of the rules which are made to make everbody's time on Bnet to be as pleasant as possible. They are punished to make sure that the rules are obeyed and that there will be no exceptions.
At the same time they are taught a lesson, further violations will result in stricter penalties and will not be tolerated. This will ensure that users do not transgress the rules and if they continue to do so then it's a one-way ticket to a permaban.
Moving onto "Protection". Say if someone posts a link to a shock site or illegal material, blacklisting this user will remove their posts in the forums making other users not suffer the experience of visiting a shock site. The bastards got me one time :(

I don't get it punishment is a type of correction?
Punishment is like justice: revenge with a false sense of authority and welldoing. The purpose of any rule or law is fundamentally to protect an individual. Aside from the ethics of it, there are also a wealth of psychological studies that undermine the merits of punishment as a form of effective reinforcement.

Posted by: ArchAssain
Its a lesson, if you don't learn the first time, or maybe the 4th time from you're mistakes, take 5 minutes and read the rules of the forum you desire to post in.

Learn from your mistakes, unless you're fortunate enough to learn from someone else'.
While certain offenses can be easier to avoid, the rules are currently very ambiguous in wording. There is a considerable gray area in which one could be unsure whether or not something posted would be in violation of the rules, and often this comes down to which moderator reviews the post.

Well your right duck, its more at the moderators discretion then anything when ban's are being laid out. Although being mature and respecting what rules you obtain an abysmal grasp on is pretty damn easy. Yet disrespectful members sometimes do not grasp the concept of following simple rules and that is why we have ban and trust system. So ultimately its a lesson no more no less and we as individual's choose to abide by the rules in place or not.

Bans are preventative measures to encourage you to follow the rules. Also Bungie has said there may be something more than bans in the future. I'm hoping it is in game punishments. You spam the forums you lose rank in the game, then they are banned so they won't be whining even more in the forums.
